Legal Counsel

We’re looking for a values-driven, strategic Legal Counsel to join us in a newly created in-house role at McNab.

This new role is all about building strong, proactive relationships across the McNab Group and helping us act with legal purpose – today and into the future.

You’ll bring a solid legal background and a mindset geared toward adding value, not just managing risk. You don’t need to come from construction, property, or supply chain – just a sharp legal mind and a hands-on, commercially aware approach.

You’ll help shape our legal strategy across the group and our corporate areas, embedding smart legal practices that support sustainable business success.

Key Responsibilities:

• Deliver high impact, clear, practical legal advice and drafting across the group, that empower internal teams to act decisively and create strategic outcomes.
• Drive legal risk awareness and help embed practical, business-focused policies and training across the organisation, that create commercial value.
• Act as a legal oversight as required, to any agreements, for example land and development deals, joint ventures etc.
• Mitigate legal and reputational risk by ensuring McNab’s activities comply with relevant legislation, codes, and contractual obligations across our varying domains.
• Own legal due diligence processes for new projects, business ventures, and acquisitions, ensuring sound legal foundations for growth and investment decisions.
• Establish and embed legal frameworks, templates, and systems that streamline operations while maintaining compliance and clarity across the group.
• Support training and uplift in legal literacy across the business -building confidence in risk awareness, contract handling, and escalation pathways in collaboration with divisional leadership.
• Monitor legal and regulatory changes, advising the business on emerging obligations and industry trends to ensure McNab remains ahead of the curve.

About you 

We’re open-minded about what the right candidate looks like, but ideally you’ll bring:

• A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and a current Australian practising certificate
• Enough post-admission experience in private practice or in-house generalist roles to be confident and accountable with the responsibilities of this role in an autonomous and effective way
• Strong commercial acumen partnered with a realistic, values orientated approach to legal advice
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trusted relationships across all levels of the business and with external stakeholders
• Someone passionate about business that then uses this value to be curious and proactive in our space – you anticipate trends and issues and help the business stay ahead of them
• Experience working in or advising fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environments
• You’re someone who thrives in a collaborative, down-to-earth environment – even though you will work autonomously in the role
• A curiosity and interest in your own career that sees you potentially develop into Senior Legal Counsel or General Legal Counsel roles, as the business continues to expand
