Design Engineer
Founded in 1979, OKAMOTO Structural Engineering (OSE) is a nationwide, structural engineering firm that specializes in retail, commercial, industrial, residential and government buildings and structures. Today, OSE is seeking to grow at a more aggressive rate through hiring additional engineers and capitalizing on synergies with our sister company JMC2 Civil Engineering.
We now seek Design Engineers who are the heart of our organization. We welcome all levels of experience as long as candidates are confident to work on varying project types and to learn new skills. They will perform all levels of complexity while under close supervision while learning and assisting in a variety of engineering duties. These employees are given individual projects where they can learn established methodologies but also question those methods in search of both a better understanding and a comfort that these are the best way to proceed.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Supports project delivery to the satisfaction of our clients
Measure: Projects are being delivered on time and on budget.
- Performs projects and tasks so they are successfully completed in a logical and timely manner
Measure: Always aware of project status - on time, per the client’s requirements, and without cost overruns. Performs site visits and field inspections to their supervisor’s satisfaction.
- Performs a variety of engineering tasks as required by management and our clients
Measure: Demonstrates a moderate expertise in the engineering concepts, practices, and procedures needed to properly complete all work products
- Prepares accurate and quality work products
Measure: Ensures that request for information (RFI’s), plans, reports, calculations, shop drawings, etc. follow all relevant building codes and project standards
- Takes ownership of their work
Measure: Responsible for plans, calculations, and specifications being prepared
- Provides excellent client service by constantly demonstrating responsiveness and service orientation to our customer’s needs. Always communicates effectively with customers, staff, project team members, and public agencies on all issues.
Measure: Client satisfaction surveys are being returned with at least a ‘Good’ rating on all categories.
- Work oriented towards results
Measure: Takes ownership of assignment/project results with assistance from project managers. OSE’s work products are being processed and approved with minimal delays or plan check corrections. A Design Engineer can handle heavy workloads under tight deadlines.

Measure: Able to take on more complex work with less assistance
Skills (min.):
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree (structural engineering emphasis preferred)
- Experience: Some preferred
- Computer Skills: MS Office, structural software, limited CADD experience
- Certifications: Engineer in Training preferred, CA driver’s license (required)
- Communication: Strong written and speaking skills (required)
