About the role:

This position is situated within the MacKillop National After Hours Services Unit which is responsible for providing high quality residential care that supports the emotional, social and behavioural care needs of vulnerable young people.

The After Hours Support Worker is a member of the MacKillop National After Hours Services Unit and reports to the After Hours Support Worker Coordinator.  

Support staff in providing ‘best practise’ care that meets the day-to-day needs of young people whilst delivering high quality outcomes for all young people and their families.

Participate in team meetings with the National After Hours Support Worker Team and other forums as required.

  • Availability to work a variety of shifts including sleepovers and active nights

Key result areas and responsibilities

Support for Young People

  • Contribute to the development of a safe and nurturing environment for young people;
  • Assist young people to develop independent living skills;
  • Protect and respect the rights of young people;

Residential Care

  • Provide residential care that reflects the organisation’s values, policies and practice frameworks including The Way We Work With Young People;
  • Work collaboratively with residential care staff, case workers, service providers and families;
  • Undertake ‘Roving’ responsibilities between Residential units within the designated regions of A.C.T.
  • Maintain records and documentation as required [including case notes, communication books, incident reports, hazard and near miss reports etc];

This is a casual opportunity based in Canberra within our Residential Care Program. The position reports to the After Hours Coordinator.

Key Selection Criteria: 

To be successful in this role, you will have: 

  • A knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and an awareness of the current issues faced by Aboriginal children, young people and their families.
  • Experience in youth services or residential care;
  • Ability to relate to and work with young people with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties;
  • Ability to implement behaviour management plans for young people with challenging behaviours;
  • Experience and understanding of OH&S issues in the workplace;
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
