The Opportunity:

We are currently seeking an experienced Leading Hand Mechanical Fitter/Machinist who can take on the challenge of working hands on, while overseeing the machine shop and carrying out gearbox and transmission rebuilds. The position is based at our Hunter Valley facility in Rutherford and reports to the Business Unit Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take the lead with safe working practices to ensure superior levels of safety and housekeeping are obtained - achieve zero lost time injuries in workshop.
  • Coordinate personnel, while working hands on to execute assigned work to required standards.
  • Ensure standard work practices and procedures are followed.
  • Attend safety meetings and carry out safety observations.
  • Assist in the control of consumable and tooling usage to minimise wastage.
  • Assist in the review of daily timesheets from shop floor personnel.
  • Ensure Corporate Engineering Standards are met.
  • Assist the Business Unit Manager in monitoring of monthly performance KPI’s and develop improvement strategies.

The knowledge, skills and abilities we’re looking for:

  • Relevant trade qualification in a mechanical and machinist role.
  • Minimum 5 years workshop experience 
  • Previous experience working as a leading hand or similar
  • Demonstrated experience in the rebuild of gearboxes and transmissions
  • Demonstrated experience in operating Centre Lathes, Radial Drills, Horizontal and Vertical Borers, Milling machines.
  • Sound computer skills – Word, Excel, Kronos.
  • Experience in the use of SAP
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise and plan jobs.
