School Based Traineeship in Aged Care

 Aged Care School Based Traineeships 2026

We are offering two (2) local secondary students in Year 10-12 during 2026 the opportunity to apply for a clinical traineeship position, working one day per week (THURSDAYS) at NHW - Illoura Aged Care facility, whilst completing their secondary studies.

Students accepted into this program, apply to study a Certificate III in Individual Support – Ageing and Disability. A nationally recognized qualification in the health care industry. This traineeship, would replace one school subject during the 2026 school year and can contribute credit towards VCE or VCAL studies. 

Upon completion of this certificate, participants will have acquired skills and theory within the healthcare sector, which will allow them to work as a Personal Care Assistant in Aged care. This position would suit students interested in working with our elderly residents to make a difference in the quality of their lives, while acquiring increased career, study and employment options.

Whilst completing this certificate, trainees would work directly/hands on with the residents, under full supervision of a NHW nursing staff member. Duties would include assisting to provide all daily hygiene needs such as showering, grooming, dressing, toileting and managing incontinence, assisting residents to eat and to mobilize. Trainees, with the support of staff, will also be caring for residents who have high levels of disability and some whom may have dementia.

All students will complete core study units including work health safety, infection control and confidentiality. Students will also complete electives related to health care including, provide support to people living with dementia, work effectively with older people and provide support to meet personal care needs. The theory component of this course is delivered by The Centre and all relevant RTO fees will be covered by Kestrel.

Throughout the duration of this School Based Traineeship you will be provided with ongoing support by all parties involved.  

This is an entry level position and applicable award wages will apply.

About You

The trainees we seek will ideally be looking to work towards a career in healthcare. They will possess excellent presentation and communication skills as well as a compassionate and caring nature.  You will also require a high level of motivation to successfully complete the practical and theory based components of your Traineeship.
