In the face of rising levels of unmet legal need, Justice Connect designs and delivers high impact interventions to increase access to legal support and progress social justice.
Justice Connect’s Homeless Law is Victoria’s specialist free legal service for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Since 2001, our Homeless Law team has worked closely with pro bono lawyers to increase access to specialised legal support for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
Our tailored Homeless Law services, which focus on preventing and ending homelessness, are outreach-based and client-centred, and don’t just focus on legal needs. Homeless Law has integrated staff social workers and collaborates with community sector partners to ensure that clients’ needs are holistically addressed. Homeless Law also prioritises advocating for better laws and policies through evidence-based strategic engagement and advocacy, which is focused on stopping homelessness before it starts and preventing the criminalisation of homelessness.
Our ideal candidate
You'll bring to the team experience in the following areas:
- Confidence and skills to deliver, and support the delivery of, high-quality legal services in Homeless Law’s integrated practice, including in the context of co-location with community-based partners.
- High-quality interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to build relationships and communicate with a range of internal and external stakeholders in a professional and respectful manner.
- Experience working with a diverse range of clients and stakeholders, including help-seekers experiencing challenging circumstances and complex vulnerabilities
- Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills and the ability to successfully manage stakeholder relationships, including with Homeless Law clients, the pro bono legal profession, the community legal and homelessness sectors and government
Expertise that you may have that would support our team:
- Eligible to hold an unrestricted practicing certificate
Candidates will need to demonstrate commitment to Justice Connect's vision, strategy and values.
What you will achieve in the role
In this role, you’ll work to
- Provide legal information, advice and casework services for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness and secondary consults for Homeless Law community partners.
- Support Homeless Law’s service delivery, including by drafting legal memorandums and contributing to support for pro bono partners.
- Identify and escalate legal risk and legal practice management issues to the Homeless Law Principal Lawyer.
- Contribute to Homeless Law's systemic advocacy and project work.
A week in this role
If you were here last week, you would have:
- participated in Homeless Law and Justice Connect team meetings to share your insights on service delivery
- Prepared a comprehensive legal guidance for our pro-bono lawyers ahead of Homeless Law clinic appointments
- Provided case work support to pro-bono lawyers
- Attended a meeting to discuss intake and triage with our Homeless Law intake team

Important role information
The position reports to the Principal Lawyer of Homeless Law program.
Employment is full time fixed term for 12 months.
The salary for this role is $107,531.21 per annum plus superannuation which will be paid according to statutory requirement with annual leave loading and generous salary packaging options.
This role can be based at our Melbourne or Sydney CBD offices with 40% of the month in the workplace with hybrid working arrangements.
