Overview of our role

The Legal Counsel – Markets role provides trusted, commercially focused legal support to our Group businesses, including Jemena and Zinfra. Working as a close business partner, this role supports Zinfra’s construction and maintenance operations, and the Gas Mrkets transmission pipeline business enabling confident decision‑making and positive outcomes.

You will partner with stakeholders to deliver practical legal solutions, identifying and managing legal risk, advising on corporate and commercial matters, and supporting regulatory, compliance, operational and strategic initiatives. The role also involves legal project management, managing disputes and litigation, working with external counsel, and contributing to policies, procedures and continuous improvement across legal services.

This position sits within a collaborative in‑house legal team and is designed to operate independently, while recognising when to inform and seek support from Lead Counsel, colleagues or external advisers. For strategically significant matters, you will work under the guidance of Lead Counsel.

Experience or interest in developing expertise across gas transmission, operation and maintenance of utilities infrastructure, construction projects, energy regulation and corporate/commercial transactions will be valuable and can be built in the role.

A little about you

  • Preferably a minimum of 4 years’ legal experience (post admission) providing legal advice on construction, infrastructure O&M, corporate and commercial matters, and energy more generally
  • A working knowledge of dispute resolution models, approaches and practices
  • A good track record of involvement in major projects and/or corporate transactions
  • Solid legal experience negotiating, reviewing and drafting legal documentation including contracts
  • Familiarity with issues affecting energy infrastructure will be highly regarded
  • Legal experience in interpreting and advising on utilities-related legislation and contracts will also be highly regarded

Qualifications / certifications & Skills

  • Bachelor of Laws or equivalent law degree
  • Eligible for admission to practice law in NSW/ Victoria
  • An ability to interpret / analyse complex legislation, contractual documentation and other legal documents
  • Undertake research on complex legal matters, and communicate the advice / conclusions in a clear and concise way, that is appropriately tailored for the audience
  • Commercially astute, possessing strong analytical and research skills in relation to complex legal/commercial issues, and be capable of identifying and analysing the associated commercial and risk implications for the group
  • Must possess good drafting and negotiation skills developed from a transactional background
  • Competent using the Microsoft Office suite of products skills
  • Other, as indicated in the Legal team’s competency framework from time to time.
