Legal Counsel

Overview of our role

Our legal team is a valued business partner, working alongside stakeholders to navigate complex challenges, support major projects and help deliver essential energy infrastructure to communities across Australia.

In this opportunity you will primarily focus on supporting project delivery for Data Centre customers and emerging legal issues for the Jemena Electricity Network(JEN) given the energy transition. Your role will also extend to supporting the legal needs on the day to day operation of the JEN business. 

What you'll be involved in

Exposure to major infrastructure projects, construction and land arrangements would be an advantage;

• Legal issues relating to energy transition and electricity distribution and transmission infrastructure; and procurement and corporate/commercial transactional work.
• Provide practical legal advice across commercial, regulatory and operational matters.
• Partner with stakeholders to deliver strategic, commercially sound outcomes.
• Draft, negotiate and advise on a range of corporate and commercial agreements.
• Identify legal risks and help develop effective mitigation strategies.
• Support major infrastructure projects, energy transition initiatives, and gas and electricity network operations.
• Manage disputes, litigation matters and relationships with external legal advisors.
• Contribute to policy development, business improvement initiatives and legal project delivery.

• Strong ability to interpret complex legal and commercial matters and provide clear, practical advice.
• Commercial acumen with the ability to identify risks and support informed business decisions.
• Well-developed drafting, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience researching and analysing complex legal issues.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and a commitment to ongoing professional development.

Qualifications / Certifications & Experience

• Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent) and eligibility to practise in Victoria.
• Around 5+ years' post-admission experience in corporate, commercial, energy, construction or infrastructure law.
• Strong experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts and legal documentation.
• Proven involvement in major projects, corporate transactions and dispute resolution matters.
• In-house legal experience and exposure to energy, utilities or infrastructure sectors will be highly regarded.
