How you fit:

The Metadata & Lineage Specialist plays a key role in managing enterprise metadata, tracking data lineage, and ensuring data transparency across the organization. This role is responsible for implementing and maintaining metadata management frameworks, data cataloguing tools, and lineage tracking processes to improve data discoverability, governance, and compliance.

The specialist will work closely with Data Governance, Data Engineering, Analytics, and IT teams to ensure that metadata is captured, standardized, and maintained across all data platforms. The ideal candidate has expertise in metadata management, data lineage tracking, and data cataloguing tools (e.g., Unity Catalogue, Informatica, or similar solutions). They must have a strong understanding of data flows, data governance frameworks, and best practices in data documentation and classification.

What you do:

Metadata Management & Data Cataloguing

  • Implement and maintain metadata management frameworks and standards to support enterprise data governance.
  • Administer and enhance metadata repositories and data cataloguing tools 
  • Ensure that metadata is accurately documented, structured, and linked to relevant business and technical data assets.
  • Develop and maintain data dictionaries, business glossaries, and taxonomy structures to improve data discoverability.
  • Work with Data Stewards and Business Owners to ensure metadata is aligned with business objectives.

Data Lineage & Traceability

  • Establish data lineage frameworks to track data movement, transformations, and dependencies across the data ecosystem.
  • Implement automated lineage tracking solutions to capture end-to-end data flow across databases, ETL pipelines, and reporting platforms.
  • Ensure that data lineage visualizations and documentation are up to date and accessible to relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Data Engineering and IT teams to integrate lineage tracking into ETL/ELT workflows and data processing pipelines.

Data Governance & Compliance Support

  • Ensure that metadata and lineage processes align with regulatory compliance requirements (GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, SOX, etc.).
  • Support audits, compliance reporting, and risk assessments by providing metadata insights and lineage maps.
  • Define metadata governance policies to ensure data integrity, security, and accessibility.
  • Work with Compliance and Risk teams to enforce data classification, retention, and access control policies.

Data Quality & Integration with Governance Processes

  • Partner with Data teams to identify data inconsistencies, anomalies, and gaps in metadata documentation.
  • Support data profiling and quality monitoring efforts by ensuring metadata repositories store data accuracy, completeness, and validity metrics.
  • Assist in establishing data stewardship roles and responsibilities for metadata maintenance.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as the subject matter expert (SME) on metadata and lineage, providing guidance and best practices to business and technical teams.
  • Work with Data Engineers, and Analysts to integrate metadata management and lineage tracking into data platforms and analytics workflows.
  • Provide training and support for business users, analysts, and IT teams on how to use metadata and lineage tools effectively.

What you need:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Management, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience in metadata management, data lineage tracking, or data governance roles.
  • Hands-on experience with metadata management and data cataloging tools 
  • Strong understanding of data classification, business glossaries, and taxonomy development.
  • Experience working with data documentation, metadata repositories, and stewardship models.
  • Experience implementing data lineage tracking tools and frameworks to map data flows across the enterprise.
  • Ability to work with Data Engineering teams to track lineage within ETL, ELT, data pipelines, and data warehouses.
  • Familiarity with SQL-based data platforms, APIs, and data processing workflows to extract lineage details.
  • Ability to integrate metadata and lineage tracking with data quality frameworks to improve data reliability and trustworthiness.
  • Experience with data profiling, anomaly detection, and quality assurance tools.
  • Proven experience working with cross-functional teams including Data Engineering, IT, Compliance, Risk, and Business Intelligence.
