Our client, one of the largest electrical energy suppliers in Canada, has an immediate need for a Engineer for Geotechnical - Transmission - Stations This is a contract position for one (1) year located in Burnaby, British Columbia


This role requires demonstrated experience with geotechnical design for moderately to heavily loaded permanent building foundations and lightly to moderately loaded substation component foundations Industry experience must be translatable to station facility design for overhead structures and underground cables which have operating voltages from 60kV to 500kV in an electric utility environment, as well as design for telecommunication towers


  • Develop safe engineering solutions by using initiative & judgement to perform tasks including developing designs, analyzing & resolving problems, & interpreting engineering specifications on medium to highly complex assignments for projects & operations
  • Meet safety, cost, quality, & time objectives by proposing changes in plans & estimated costs, recommending payment for work completed by contractors, preparing progress reports, coordinating work schedules & other similar tasks
  • Resolve highly technical & unusual design & field engineering problems by conducting independent studies & analysis, exercising independent judgment in selecting & interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs to support successful operations &/or project completion at
  • Participate in ’s engineering practice by conducting independent studies & analysis, contributing to the development of technical standards, exercising judgment in selecting & interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs, & making decisions related to methods & designs as well as providing guidance & advice to other engineering professionals to develop future capability at  Perform engineering oversight acting as Owner’s Engineer
  • Deliver exceptional customer service by communicating with stakeholders & performing activities such as defining the scope of engineering/geoscience services to be provided, establishing the basic design criteria with the client, approving all related technical documentation, & assessing & reporting on work progress against standards, objectives, & specifications to support completion of projects safely, with quality, within budget & on time
  • Make decisions & recommendations of a complex technical nature including the establishment of design bases, criteria & concepts, on matters affecting the management of engineering/geoscience resources & activities to support major work assignments for the engineering divisions


  • 12 years of experience or more
  • Must have PEng, & provide proof of Permit to Practice, registered with EGBC when hired
  • Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering from accredited Universities in Canada
  • Must have demonstrated experience as Geotechnical Engineer
  • Must have experience performing geohazard/geotechnical risk assessment
  • Must have E5 level of experience & skill classification according to EGBC 2017 Guide of Competency Assessment,
  • Familiarity with CAD systems & drawing standards
  • Must have valid BC drivers license
  • Experience in utilities for transmission station projects is an asset, however, industry experience must be translatable to station facility design for overhead structures & underground cables which have operating voltages from 60kV to 500kV in an electric utility environment, as well as design for telecommunication towers
  • Ability to use standard industry design/analysis software
  • Intermediate MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint OneNote)

Specific Areas of Expertise

  • Act as POR (ie signing & sealing the deliverables), or conduct only “Review & Acceptance” of the Work conducted by Others (Consultant) Proponent is not expected to demonstrate technical leadership in all but should be proficient in some of the following areas of practice
  • Site investigation program including: i) devising drilling & in-situ testing plan including CPT, ii) setting up instrumentation installation & its monitoring plan, & iii) devising index & advanced lab testing plan
  • Settlement calculation & preload design, including wick drain design, instrumentation set up & its monitoring program
  • Foundation design input such as: bearing capacity, uplift capacity, lateral capacity (for shallow foundation of tower structures) including passive & base resistances, frost depth & estimation of adfreezing forces
  • Conventional pile design (examples include, driven steel piles & augered cast in place (CIP) pile foundations) including those that need to tolerate seismic loadings when soil is identified as liquefiable Pile analysis & design includes: i) preparation of a “Test Pile & Production Pile Load Testing” program, its review & acceptance, & ii) structural analysis such WEAP & incorporating its results in pile design & specifications
  • Helical pile/pier preliminary design including Test Pile & Load Test plan
