Our client, one of the largest electrical energy suppliers in Canada, has an immediate need for a Senior Piping Engineer Part-Time expected to fill 50% (or more) of full-time hours. This is a contract position for two (2) years located in Burnaby, British Columbia. 

 Description:  The Senior Piping Engineer will be required to apply their engineering knowledge to provide innovative engineering, estimating, planning, quality management services for medium thigh complexity projects/operations safely, with quality, within budget, & on time.  Preparation of conceptual detailed designs specifications for execution by others mechanical auxiliary systems. Part time (50% or more of full-time hours) 

 Role Accountabilities 

  • Develop safe engineering solutions by using initiative & judgement to perform tasks including developing designs, analyzing & resolving problems, & interpreting engineering specifications on medium to highly complex assignments for projects & operations 
  • Meet safety, cost, quality, & time objectives by proposing changes in plans & estimated costs, recommending payment for work completed by contractors, preparing progress reports, coordinating work schedules & other similar tasks 
  • Resolve highly technical & unusual design & field engineering problems by conducting independent studies & analysis, exercising independent judgment in selecting & interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs to support successful operations &/or project completion at  
  • Make decisions & recommendations of a complex technical nature including the establishment of design bases, criteria & concepts, &/or on matters affecting the management of engineering/geoscience resources & activities to support major work assignments for the engineering divisions  
  • Perform detailed design of piping systems, including material specification, sizing, layout, stress analysis, & pipe support selection, 
  • Specify equipment for use in piping systems including valves, pumps, hydraulic power units, heat exchangers, strainers, filters, oil-water separators, air compressors, dryers, & process instrumentation, 
  • Take Professional Engineering responsibility for; Issued for Construction & Record Issue drawings, engineering reports, inspection & test plans, commissioning plans & technical specifications for the design, supply & installation of auxiliary systems, 
  • Act in the role of Owner's Engineer, & efficiently manage working relationships with manufacturers, consultants & project teams ensuring that needs are met or exceeded & accepting the work of others on behalf, 
  • Provide work leadership & technical direction to junior engineers, technologists, consultants & support staff, 
  • Check & review work of the project team & of other consultants & contractors to ensure accuracy & achievement of required results & adherence to engineering good practices & standards, 
  • Prepare design work packages including scope, duration, & level of effort estimates  
  • Design upgrades for mechanical systems using state of the art design tools; 
  • Act in the role of Owner's Engineer, & efficiently manage working relationships with manufacturers, consultants & project teams ensuring that needs are met or exceeded 
  • Review work of the project team & of other consultants & contractors to ensure accuracy & achievement of required results & adherence to engineering good practices & standards 
  • Prepare reports detailing condition assessment investigations of facility equipment & systems, evaluation & analysis of the investigation, & recommendations to address any deficiencies found 
  • Provide technical guidance during equipment installation & commissioning 

Must have Qualifications 

  • 10 + years of experience in a relevant engineering field combined with practical experience in the field with a minimum three (3) years' experience in Mechanical Auxiliary systems layout design, preferably in hydroelectric generating stations 
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering accompanied with a high level of knowledge & experience in the mechanical aspects of hydroelectric auxiliary systems, or equivalent transferable experience, & ongoing development such as self-study, attendance at technical courses & participation in technical & professional societies 
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with Engineers & Geoscientists BC or be immediately eligible for registration. 
  • Strong proficiency with ASME B31.1, BC Building Code & ASME Sec VIII Div 1 
  • Ability to design piping systems & work with piping designer/drafters to review or produce a P&ID & a layout of the system, sizing all equipment including pipe supports 
  • Experience with pressurized oil, pressurized water, drainage water, potable water & compressed air systems 
  • Strong experience with seismic design of equipment & systems 
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Plant 3D &/or Revit, ROHR2 & MathCad would be an asset for this assignment but is not mandatory 
  • Proficiency with design of HVAC or Fire Protection systems would be an asset for this assignment, but is not mandatory 

Additional Experience Required This role requires experience with the design of mechanical systems for hydroelectric utility generation stations & demonstrated experience working with utility design solutions in an electric utility environment.
