Our client, one of the largest electrical energy suppliers in Canada, has an immediate need for a Senior Civil Engineer with estimating, planning, and quality management services for medium complexity projects. This is a contract position for one (1) Year located in Vancouver, BC.  During onboarding candidate will need to come onsite to Edmonds then can work from home while COVID restrictions are ongoing but may need to attend onsite meetings on occasion and will need to work onsite once pandemic restrictions are lifted 

This position is needed to help with an increasing workload in capital project, emergency replacement and restoration work, asset management strategic OMA work programs and Owners Engineer review work 

 Role Accountabilities 

  • Develop safe engineering solutions by using initiative & judgement to perform tasks including developing designs, analyzing & resolving problems & interpreting engineering specifications on medium complexity &  scope assignments for projects & operations 
  • Assist project or operations management to meet safety, cost, quality & time objectives by proposing changes in plans & estimated costs, recommending payment for work completed by contractors, preparing progress reports, coordinating work schedules & other similar tasks 
  • Resolve hihly technical & unusual design & field engineering problems by conducting independent studies &  analysis, exercising independent judgment in selecting & interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs to support successful oerations/project completion 
  • Participate in engineering practices by conducting independent studies & analysis, contributing to the development of technical standards, exercising judgment in selecting &  interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs & making decisions related to methods & designs as well as providing guidance & advice to other engineering professionals to develop future capability 
  • Deliver exceptional customer service by communicating with stakeholders & performing activities such as defining the scope of engineering/geoscience services to be provided, establishing the basic design criteria with the client approving all related technical documentation & assessing & reporting on work progress against standards objectives & specifications to support completion of projects safely with quality within budget & on time 
  • Prepare project documentation & deliverables in accordance with project and Engineering Design Practices - evaluation reports specifications, proposals estimates design basis calculations hazard logs test plans 
  • Prepare design work packages including scope duration, & level of effort estimates 
  • Prepare signed/sealed engineering deliverables as a Professional of Record (PoR) in accordance with EGBC & Design Practices 
  • Provide technical assistance a& construction support in the field & undertake field reviews as required by EGBC 
  • Design of Transmission Stations at voltage ranging from 25kV to 500kV 
  • Structural design, analysis & detailing for Concrete, Steel, Masonry & Timber structures associated with Electrical Substations & Switching Stations such as: Control, feeder & compressor buildings 
  • Electrical equipment supports & foundations (Transformers, Circuit Breakers, etc.) 
  • Line termination structures & foundations 
  • Single pole mast structures & foundations 
  • Underground concrete manholes/vaults & cable duct banks 
  • Modification, repair a& upgrade of existing substation structures 
  • Seismic analysis & design 
  • Civil design, analysis & detailing for switchyard site development such as: 
  • Station site preparation & Station access road alignment & profiles 
  • Fill embankments & retaining walls 
  • Site drainage, culverts & ditches 
  • Oil spill catchment &containment systems 

Required Education and Experience 

  • 8 years' experience in a relevant engineering field or equivalent 
  • Experience with the design of electrical utility substations with operating voltages from 12kV to 500kV & demonstrated experience working with utility design solutions in an electric utility environment 
  • Must have P.Eng and be registered with EGBC or a P.Eng who has worked in BC - Candidates who do not meet this requirement likely won't be considered as they don't experience with BC seismic building codes (BC is an earthquake zone) 
  • You may be required to subscribe to a digital seal technology service offered by Notarius 
  • Strong in structural engineering (more emphasis on this than civil background 
  • Experience in Civil 3D and/or Inventor design software is an asset. 
  • Experience in stations design 
  • Experience in a hydroelectrical utility or experience working on hydroelectrical utility projects is an asset 
  • Intermediate English skills written/spoken 
  • Familiarity with CAD systems & drawing standards 
  • Ability to use standard industry design/analysis software 
  • Intermediate MS Office skills (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) 
  • Ability to provide technical directions to junior engineers 
  • Ability to manage design tasks including scope, schedule and cost 
  • Ability to find engineering solutions that add value & to reach consensus 
  • Experience in project management including estimating, cost control & project administration 
  • Experience in Civil 3D and/or Inventor design software is an asset
