On behalf of one of North America’s largest natural gas distributors, we are looking for a Risk Specialist in Houston, TX

Responsible for conducting quantitative risk assessments to provide decision support in the Operational Risk Management and Asset Investment Planning processes.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Facilitate the hazard identification and process hazard analysis sessions using industry-standard methodologies (e.g. HAZID, What-If, HAZOP).
  • Develop QRA templates in Excel to analyze risk related to pipeline system integrity and reliability.
  • Independently conduct quantitative risk assessments (QRA) employing a combination of Fault Tree Analysis and Event Tree Analysis (bowtie).
  • Analyze and evaluate a wide range of operational risks affecting financial, safety, operational reliability, environmental, and reputational receptors.
  • Utilize findings from Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability studies; Environmental Impact Assessments, Gas Pipeline Scenario Planning studies; and Estimated Maximum Loss studies to support QRAs.
  • Write risk assessment reports to make recommendations to decision-makers based on risk assessment results with some interpretation of established guidelines and risk tolerance criteria.

  • Consultants and Service Providers – Direct oversight of contractors providing services related to Process Safety and Risk as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • 7+ years of directly relevant industry work experience.
  • Experience with Process Hazard Analysis techniques, particularly HAZOP, FMEA, and What-If studies.
  • Experience with Quantitative Risk Assessments, particularly Fault Tree and Event Tree Analysis.
  • Strong understanding of gas pipeline hydraulics, and fundamental topics such as fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
  • Strong mathematical ability and knowledge of probability and statistics, particularly in the realm of reliability/survival analysis.
  • Ability to work in an independent environment under the scrutiny and pressure of regulatory agencies.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Preferred
  • Chemical, Mechanical, Petroleum Engineering preferred.
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Engineering preferred.
  • Experience using risk analysis tools such as PHAST/SAFETI, CAFTA, BowTie XP, @Risk, etc.
  • Experience with human factors analysis in process industries.
  • Experience with Bayesian statistics, particularly in a risk management application.
  • Knowledge of process equipment and process engineering.
  • Knowledge of OSHA 1910.119, ISO 31000, API 1173, and related codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of financial analysis such as Discounted Cash Flow and Net Present Value.
  • Risk management experience gained from diverse industries.
  • Pipeline and/or plant operations work experience.

Working Conditions:

  • Approximately 90% Office Environment-vs-10 % in a field office or facilities outside operations in all types of weather.
  • May be exposed to work near moving mechanical parts
  • Work in high, precarious places
  • Work near toxic or caustic chemicals
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather); fumes or airborne particles; the risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment may be above 90 dBA.
  • Works to meet concrete regulatory deadlines under facility operating authorizations.
