Engineer - Graphite Core Assembly

The main responsibilities and authorities for the Engineer - Graphite Core Assembly are to manage the production of graphite core components and assemblies including project planning, concept evaluation, material qualification, design, analysis and manufacture. 

Principal Duties

  • Develop design, manufacture and analysis plans for the Graphite Core Assembly (GCA)
  • Assess graphite core components and assemblies for manufacturability as well as assembly and integration considerations
  • Assist with material procurement and characterisation
  • Engage with vendors and consultants to produce and assess structural graphite components
  • Coordinate and iterate design efforts with other teams and systems to accommodate system interfaces, analysis activities and manufacturing
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models and manufacturing drawings of the GCA
  • Define/interpret the functions and requirements of the GCA in relation to its role as a structural component in an HTGR's

Education and Experience Required

  • Master’s in mechanical engineering or an equivalent field
  • 3 years’ experience working in the nuclear industry, preferably on HTGRs
  • Strong commitment to employee safety and well-being
  • Knowledge of ASME BPVC Section III div 5, specifically Nonmetallic core components
  • Knowledge of Siemens Teamcenter or other similar project management software advantageous
  • Knowledge of the characteristics of nuclear graphite, specifically its behavior during and after neutron irradiation
  • Knowledge of the theory, fundamentals and use of CFD and FEA software

Skills and Strengths Desired

  • Skilled in the use of Python or similar programming languages
  • Proficiency in the use of FEA and CFD software (preferably ANSYS Mechanical and Fluent) 
  • Technical proficiency in 3-dimensional design modelling tools and software, preferably NX
  • Have a strong orientation toward internal and external customers
  •  Work with other departments to increase overall strength of the group and company
  • Possess excellent verbal and writing skills to effectively communicate with others
  • Work proactively and independently
  • Resolve project and operational issues
  • Analyze and solve problems daily
  • Maintain collaborative, courteous, and respectful relationships
  • Foster a collaborative team environment

Work Conditions

  • Most of the normal duties will be performed inside, which will involve almost constant interaction with other employees and/or the public with frequent interruptions
  • Travel is required on an as needed basis and out of town and international travel is required
  • Some irregular hours are required; these may include nights, weekends, holidays, and emergencies
  • Must be able to work in generally accepted office and field environments
