Technology & Privacy Lawyer | Hamilton Locke | Melbourne

The role

We’re looking for a Technology & Privacy Lawyer to join our highly regarded national IP & Technology practice, based in Melbourne. With work spanning both domestic and international markets, this role offers the opportunity to work on complex, interesting technology projects as part of an active and supportive team.

In this role, you’ll work with clients on technology procurement and digital transformation projects; advise on data protection, commercialisation and governance, including in connection with AI and emerging technologies; and advise on strategic privacy and cyber matters, including SOCI Act, the Consumer Data Right and Spam Act compliance. In addition, our team works collaboratively with our colleagues across the firm, including M&A and financial services, providing lawyers in the team with exposure to market-leading transactions in the technology sector and beyond.

You’ll work alongside Partner Toby Patten, who advises leading-edge mid-market to large multinational clients, with a particular focus on the healthcare and life sciences industry. During COVID-19, Toby led high-profile negotiations involving clinical research companies, the Australian Government, major universities and global biopharma companies in connection with manufacturing facilities, commercialisation, licensing and supply arrangements for COVID-19 and mRNA vaccines.

We’re looking for someone who:

• has 3–5 years’ post-qualification experience in a private practice environment as part of a technology or commercial team;
• has strong Australian technology contracting and privacy advisory experience, with any intellectual property experience also considered favourably;
• has exceptional drafting skills and strong written and verbal communication;
• can distil complex concepts and provide clear, concise and commercially focused advice;
• has a genuine interest in technology trends and the legal and regulatory issues arising from emerging technologies;
• wants to work directly with senior practitioners;
• has an entrepreneurial and innovative mind-set; and
• builds strong relationships with clients and colleagues and thrives in a collaborative, collegiate environment.
