Hostplus is an investor in residential property development alongside specialist joint venture development partners. Over the last decade alone, our equity investment has contributed to the delivery of over 7,600 land lots, townhouses and apartments nationally. As part of our strategy evolution, the residential investment management function is currently being internalised with a specialist Residential Living investment team.

As part of this team, the Legal Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice and support to the Hostplus Residential Living investment team. Investment activity is focussed on residential property development in Australia with scope to consider development across the residential apartment, residential led mixed-use, townhouse and master planned greenfield community sub-sectors. 

The opportunity

As Legal Counsel within the Hostplus Residential Living investment team, you will support land acquisition and due diligence activities by reviewing confidentiality agreements, managing property due diligence, and contributing to the negotiation of transaction and development rights documentation in collaboration with external counsel. You will also assist in structuring joint venture arrangements, including preparing term sheets, conducting legal due diligence on prospective partners, and negotiating joint venture and associated service agreements.

In addition, you will be responsible for portfolio management through the review of material contracts, oversight of disputes, and provision of timely, commercial legal advice. You will manage external legal counsel, support compliance with relevant laws and internal policies, and play a key governance role through engagement with directors and investment committees. A critical part of your role will be identifying, mitigating, and managing legal risks across all residential investment activities.

About you

  • Demonstrated experience (at least 5 years PQE), working as a property development lawyer and/or corporate transactional lawyer with property law experience, and experience working on large-scale corporate transactions
  • Current Practicing Certification
  • Tertiary qualifications and qualified to practice law in an Australian jurisdiction.
  • Experience negotiating joint venture agreements associated with property development
  • The ability to take a frontline role in complex, often time pressured investment transactions
  • Strong project management skills including workstream prioritisation
  • Strong stakeholder management skills required to manage internal and external relationships
  • Works well with limited supervision
  • Demonstrates sound judgement as well as structured thought
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Self-motivated, and willing to take the initiative
