The Assistant Buyer – Fruit & Vegetables role at Harris Farm Markets is an exciting entry point into the heart of the Harris Farm business. Working directly with and learning from a Senior Buyer, you will gain hands-on experience in the fast-paced world of fresh produce trading, market buying, and grower relationships.

This is more than just a job it is the start of a structured career pathway designed to develop you into a Buyer at Harris Farm Markets. Retail fresh food is dynamic, challenging, and rewarding, and this role will enable you to build deep product knowledge, strong commercial acumen, and valuable market insight.

You will be accountable for supporting the delivery of agreed KPIs, including sales budget, margin, profit, and other performance measures as agreed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Senior Buyer with daily market buying, order placement, and stock management
  • Support the development and maintenance of relationships with growers and wholesalers
  • Assist with selecting new products and reviewing existing ranges
  • Ensure product quality, value, and standards are met
  • Monitor produce pricing, market trends, and competitor activity
  • Support weekly promotional planning, ordering, and performance review
  • Work closely with warehouse teams to support efficient distribution and stock allocation
  • Maintain accurate data entry for orders, pricing, and supplier information
  • Commit to learning all stages of the buying process and progressing towards greater autonomy

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and general computer literacy

Additional Requirements

  • Current driver’s license and ability to travel to multiple sites
  • Willingness to commit to early morning starts (approx. 3:00am) and a Thursday–Monday roster
  • Availability during peak trading periods (Christmas and Easter; leave restrictions apply)

Desirable (but not essential)

  • Tertiary qualifications in Business, Commerce, or Agriculture (or currently enrolled)
  • Previous retail buying experience (FMCG or fresh produce)
  • Exposure to P&L management and commercial performance
