About the Team
- The Engineering Technical Services team is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining company-wide standards for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of natural gas distribution and transmission systems across North Carolina. The team also provides specialized engineering expertise to project execution and operational teams, including:
- Developing and reviewing complex pipeline and facility engineering designs
- Supporting specialty engineering programs such as corrosion control, welding, materials engineering, horizontal directional drilling (HDD), odorization, compression systems, and LNG
- Verifying and certifying Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure (MAOP)
- Performing engineering analysis for in‑service piping systems

What You Will Do
This position will support one or more natural gas pipeline engineering activities, including pipeline and facility design, engineering reviews, development and maintenance of operating standards and procedures, and specialty engineering functions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver safe, reliable, and cost‑effective engineering and design solutions aligned with all applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Provide technical support and guidance to operations teams on engineering-related issues, ensuring timely and effective resolutions.
- Lead and deliver engineering assessments, capital project designs, and maintenance project engineering.
- Support and lead engineering efforts for organizational integration initiatives, including management of technical specifications and standards programs.
- Collaborate with operations, construction, and multidisciplinary stakeholders to ensure alignment on design requirements and reviews.
- Participate in risk assessments, asset management reviews, and engineering governance activities.
- Contribute to external industry activities to support and maintain the company’s leadership position.
- Lead stakeholder response efforts related to engineering requests, ensuring timely and compliant resolutions.
- Build and maintain strong relationships across internal teams such as Gas Control, Regional Operations, Construction, and other engineering groups.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Minimum 4 years of engineering design experience in electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical, or related engineering disciplines.
- Minimum 4 years’ experience in engineering design, standards development, and technical operations support within manufacturing, energy, consulting, or similar industries.
- Strong working knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards including DOT PHMSA, API, ASME, and other engineering regulatory frameworks.
- Exceptional communication skills—both written and verbal—for engaging internal and external audiences.
- Strong facilitation, project management, and analytical skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple organizational levels.
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills; proficiency with computer systems and ability to learn new technologies.
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to travel within the state as required.
Preferred:
- Experience in natural gas transmission and/or distribution, particularly in pipeline and facility design or LNG operations.
- Prior experience in Oil & Gas engineering design, equipment selection, installation, commissioning, or troubleshooting.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation or the ability to obtain one within a designated timeframe.
Education:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- A four-year engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program (based on the year accreditation was obtained).
- A four-year engineering degree from an institution accredited through its national accrediting body under the Washington Accord (full signatory status at the time the degree was recognized).
- A non‑ABET accredited four-year engineering degree plus a post‑graduate engineering degree from an ABET‑accredited institution in the same discipline.
- A four-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, or Math paired with a post‑graduate engineering degree from an ABET‑accredited institution.
Working Conditions:
- This role is primarily office-based and includes periodic travel to additional offices or field locations. A Flexwork policy is available.
