Description:

  • We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Oversight Electrical Engineer to lead engineering oversight for utility-scale solar and wind projects across the United States and Canada.
  • This role is responsible for reviewing EPC contractor engineering deliverables (IFR and IFC), ensuring compliance with applicable standards, and providing technical leadership throughout the full project lifecycle—from development through commissioning and closeout.
  • The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in high-voltage substations, renewable energy systems, and grid interconnection, along with strong collaboration and leadership capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the review of EPC contractor engineering packages (Issued for Review (IFR) and Issued for Construction (IFC)) to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with codes and project requirements (NEC, NESC, IEEE, NFPA, etc.).
  • Provide technical feedback and coordinate design refinements with EPC contractors and project stakeholders.
  • Evaluate and approve HV substation and PV/wind plant electrical designs, including:
  • General arrangements
  • One-line diagrams
  • Grounding systems
  • Protection schemes
  • Relay coordination studies
  • Ensure proper integration of medium- and high-voltage equipment, including:
  • Main Power Transformers (MPTs)
  • Inverters
  • Switchgear
  • Circuit breakers
  • Assess system performance, design risks, and recommend optimized, cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Ensure adherence to industry standards including IEEE, UL, CSA, NFPA, NEC, and NESC.
  • Collaborate with EPC teams to deliver complete and accurate documentation for regulatory bodies such as ERCOT, FERC, and NERC.
  • Work closely with internal regulatory teams to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal interconnection requirements.
  • Oversee preparation of detailed engineering drawings and documentation to support efficient, safe, and cost-effective construction.
  • Ensure all designs align with:
  • Internal design standards and procedures
  • Environmental, health, and safety requirements
  • Participate in formal design reviews to ensure alignment on scope, performance, and deliverables.
  • Lead technical evaluation of vendor proposals and material quotations.
  • Perform technical bid evaluations and provide recommendations based on performance and compliance.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain teams to support procurement processes.
  • Provide technical leadership across all project phases:
  • Development
  • Detailed engineering
  • Construction
  • Commissioning
  • Project closeout
  • Support construction teams by resolving RFIs and addressing field engineering issues.
  • Assist in commissioning, testing, and energization of electrical systems.
  • Support and witness:
  • Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs)
  • Site Acceptance Tests (SATs)
  • Verify performance of major electrical equipment, protection systems, and substations.
  • Recommend improvements to internal engineering standards and processes.
  • Coordinate with utility providers and external stakeholders as required.
  • Support early-stage project activities including:
  • Scope definition
  • Schedule development
  • Cost estimation
  • Risk identification and mitigation

Scope/Dimensions:

  • Accountable for engineering integrity and efficient execution within assigned projects, with significant financial and operational impact.
  • Provide technical leadership and coordination across cross-functional teams and external partners.
  • Offer informal leadership and mentorship to peers and junior engineers.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • 10–15 years of experience in electrical engineering system design and commissioning, including:
  • Minimum 5 years in oil & gas
  • Minimum 3 years in renewable energy (solar, wind, HV substations, BESS, grid interconnection)
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation (APEGA or equivalent), or eligibility for registration
  • Strong expertise in:
  • HV substations (34.5kV – 345kV)
  • Renewable plant electrical systems
  • Protection & control schemes
  • Power system analysis
  • Proven understanding of grid interconnection processes and utility-scale renewable integration
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Strong collaboration and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence without formal authority
  • Valid driver’s license (motor vehicle check required)

Preferred:

  • Experience with SCADA systems, RTUs, and communication protocols:
  • DNP3
  • Modbus
  • IEC 61850
  • Expertise in advanced study areas such as:
  • Cable thermal performance and losses (AC/DC)
  • Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV)
  • Insulation coordination
  • Grounding studies
  • Load flow and short circuit analysis
  • Transformer energization studies
  • Proficiency with power system analysis tools:
  • PSS®E
  • ETAP
  • PSCAD
  • SKM
