Job Overview:
The Senior Project Planning & Scheduling Specialist is responsible for providing expert-level planning, scheduling, and controls support on large, multi-year projects with extreme complexity. This role serves as a technical authority and industry expert, ensuring best-in-class project planning practices, robust schedule control, and effective communication of schedule performance and risks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead planning and scheduling activities for major, multi-year projects with a high degree of technical and execution complexity.
- Serve as an expert user of Primavera P6, responsible for developing, maintaining, and analyzing fully integrated, resource-loaded schedules.
- Provide specialized depth and breadth of expertise in project planning and scheduling and be recognized as a subject matter expert within the organization and industry.
- Develop realistic, logic-driven project execution plans and schedules aligned with project objectives, scope, and contractual requirements.
- Recommend and implement planning and scheduling best practices across projects and project teams.
- Ensure compliance with standard procedures, systems, and governance related to project planning and scheduling.
- Define, implement, and validate appropriate WBS structures, coding standards, and resource integrations within project schedules.
- Implement and manage Earned Value Management (EVM), ensuring accurate reporting of Schedule Performance Index (SPI) and Earned Value curves.
- Review, validate, and integrate Contractor plans and schedules, ensuring alignment with project standards, contract requirements, and execution strategies.
- Maintain and update schedules using actual progress data; forecast remaining durations, milestones, and projected completion dates.
- Apply strong field execution knowledge to proactively identify schedule risks, constraints, and execution challenges.
- Develop mitigation strategies, recovery schedules, and conduct what-if and impact analyses to evaluate alternative execution scenarios or schedule disruptions.
- Proactively report schedule performance, risks, and mitigation plans to the Project Manager (PM), Construction Manager (CM), and Project Controls leadership.
- Work independently with minimal supervision, seeking guidance only in the most complex or high-risk situations.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and mentor junior planners and project controls personnel as required.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in project planning, scheduling, and controls on large capital or construction projects.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results with minimal supervision.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Advanced computer and systems proficiency, including:
- Primavera P6
- Power BI
- EcoSys
- Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred
- Demonstrated leadership and influence in driving planning and scheduling excellence.
- Strong understanding of contract-driven scheduling and claims support principles.
- Ability to translate complex schedule data into clear, actionable insights for project leadership.
