Job Overview
The Mechanical Engineer IV is responsible for supporting the development, design, and execution of facility projects related to large horsepower turbine and electric motor-driven centrifugal compressor stations and associated industrial systems. This role provides advanced engineering expertise throughout the project lifecycle, including scope development, detailed design review, vendor evaluation, construction support, and commissioning activities. The position works closely with internal stakeholders, project teams, and third-party engineering firms to ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget while maintaining compliance with all applicable regulatory, environmental, and corporate standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support the design and development of large horsepower (10,000 to 30,000 HP) turbine and electric motor-driven centrifugal compressor stations and related industrial systems.
- Oversee the development of project scope, schedules, capital cost estimates, execution plans, risk assessments, and supporting technical documentation for assigned facility projects.
- Ensure facilities are designed in compliance with all applicable regulations, industry codes, standards, and corporate requirements.
- Manage and coordinate design deliverables prepared by third-party engineering firms, ensuring alignment with project budgets and schedules.
- Review and approve engineering drawings, technical reports, specifications, calculations, and material listing sheets.
- Review vendor quotations, perform technical evaluations, and recommend equipment selections based on technical merit, pricing, and delivery schedules.
- Evaluate and support procurement activities related to turbine/compressor packages, process equipment, vessels, buildings, piping systems, valves, and fittings.
- Provide technical support during project construction, installation, startup, and commissioning phases.
- Review lessons learned from previous projects and incorporate continuous improvement recommendations into future designs and execution strategies.
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and support to junior engineers and other team members.
- Support and/or lead departmental initiatives, technical studies, and process improvement efforts as required.
- Coordinate with internal functional groups to ensure project scope definitions meet regulatory, environmental, health, and safety requirements.
- Oversee the development and implementation of technical solutions while ensuring effective coordination between internal and external stakeholders.
- Support successful operations and execution within assigned areas that have significant financial and operational impact.
- Provide informal leadership, technical direction, and collaboration support to peers and project teams.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or equivalent engineering degree required.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in engineering and project management.
- Strong experience in the design of turbine and electric motor-driven centrifugal compressor stations and industrial systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of engineering standards, industry codes, and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Strong understanding of project execution, budgeting, scheduling, risk management, and construction support activities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and quality.
- Awareness of stakeholder relationships and coordination requirements across internal and external project teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) designation preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to drive innovation, continuous improvement, and organizational change.
- Experience managing complex technical issues requiring broad technical and business knowledge.
- Experience supporting construction and commissioning activities within industrial or energy-related projects.
Working Conditions
- Approximately 80% office-based work supporting multiple project teams.
- Approximately 20% field work related to project scoping, construction support, and commissioning activities.
- Fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment with multiple concurrent priorities and high project visibility.
- Overnight travel to field locations may be required.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required during field visits and site activities.
