Job Overview:

  • The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for overseeing and managing the electrical and controls design for expansion and maintenance capital projects executed by third‑party engineering firms. This role ensures full compliance with company standards, applicable codes, and industry best practices, while maintaining alignment with approved project budgets and schedules.
  • The role serves as a key technical liaison with Project Execution, Operations, and Shared Services to ensure all project and business requirements are fully integrated into design deliverables.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership & Design Oversight

  • Lead and oversee electrical, controls, and instrumentation design for large-scale industrial projects, including turbine- and motor-driven centrifugal compressor stations (10,000–30,000 HP).
  • Ensure designs comply with NEC requirements, hazardous area classifications, regulatory standards, and corporate specifications.
  • Manage and coordinate electrical and controls deliverables developed by third‑party engineering firms.

Power

  • Demonstrated technical expertise in the design and application of:
  • Low Voltage Systems (120/208 V):
  • Lighting panels and fixtures
  • Convenience receptacles
  • Medium Voltage Systems (480 V):
  • Motor Control Centers (MCCs) and motor starters
  • Motors, power panels, transformers
  • Automatic transfer switches and generators
  • High Voltage Systems (4160 V):
  • Switchgear, motor starters, synchronous motors
  • Circuit breakers, protective relaying, and metering
  • Cable and conduit sizing
  • Starter and overload sizing
  • Grounding and bonding systems
  • Cathodic protection systems

Controls Systems

  • PLC-based control systems (Allen-Bradley or equivalent)
  • Operator interfaces (Wonderware or equivalent)
  • Communication between multiple PLC-based systems
  • Motor control circuits
  • Electric and pneumatic valve actuators
  • PID control loops
  • Emergency Shutdown Systems (ESD)

Instrumentation

  • Smart and analog transmitters (e.g., Rosemount, Honeywell)
  • Pneumatic gauges
  • Pressure, differential pressure, temperature, and level instrumentation
  • RTDs, thermocouples, and thermowells
  • Flame and gas detection systems

Project Execution & Management

  • Develop and oversee project scope, schedules, capital cost estimates, execution plans, and risk assessments.
  • Monitor and manage engineering execution against approved budgets and timelines.
  • Review, approve, and formally issue design deliverables such as drawings, technical reports, and material take-off lists.
  • Review vendor quotations, perform technical evaluations, and provide recommendations based on technical compliance, cost, and delivery.
  • Examples include turbine/compressor packages, equipment vessels, buildings, piping systems, valves, and fittings.
  • Provide technical support during construction and commissioning phases.
  • Capture and apply lessons learned to improve future project designs.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and cross-disciplinary team members.
  • Support and/or lead departmental initiatives as required.
  • Ensure early and continuous coordination with internal functional groups to meet regulatory, environmental, health, and safety requirements.
  • Provide informal leadership and influence across peer groups and stakeholders.

Scope/Dimensions:

  • Accountable for the successful execution of assigned projects with significant financial and operational impact.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of technical solutions while coordinating internal and external resources.
  • Ensures alignment of project objectives with broader corporate goals.

Contacts (Working Relationships):

  • Project Manager: Weekly coordination on progress, cost, schedule, and risk.
  • Supervisor/Manager – Facilities Project Engineering: Daily to weekly project status updates.
  • External Engineering Firms: Daily oversight of design activities and deliverables.
  • Operations Teams: Weekly engagement for alignment on operational requirements and design features.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in engineering and project execution

Preferred:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) designation
  • Proven ability to innovate, initiate change, and drive continuous improvement
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects and competing priorities
  • Strong problem-solving capabilities, applying both technical and business judgment
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong awareness of cross-functional and external stakeholder interdependencies

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily office-based environment
  • Elevated stress levels due to high-visibility, deadline-driven projects and concurrent activities
  • Periodic overnight field travel required
  • Use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during site visits
