Job Overview
The Electrical Controls Technician is responsible for performing a broad range of maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and calibration activities related to electrical, instrumentation, control, and mechanical systems. This role supports the safe and reliable operation of the client’s facilities, compressor stations, pipelines, and related equipment while ensuring compliance with company procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
The ideal candidate is highly motivated, technically skilled, safety-focused, and capable of working independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and repair electrical systems and equipment including switchgear, motors, generators, pumps, and fans
- Maintain DC electrical systems and equipment such as batteries, chargers, rectifiers, and inverters
- Troubleshoot and maintain station and unit-level electrical control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and control networks
- Maintain electrical control system end devices including motor controls, pressure transmitters, pressure switches, temperature sensors, limit switches, solenoids, and actuators
- Maintain and test safety systems and related components including ESD panels, gas detectors, flame detectors, and manual activation switches
- Perform emergency repairs and corrective maintenance activities as required
- Independently operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain gas chromatographs, flow meters, transmitters, and analyzers
- Conduct ultrasonic metering inspections and support gas measurement activities
- Utilize flow computer systems to monitor operational data, alarms, and perform transmitter calibrations
- Support operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of turbine and compressor package units, including start-up, shutdown, load adjustments, alarm monitoring, and operational response
- Operate and maintain assigned compressor stations, pipelines, block valve sites, and surrounding grounds
- Ensure compliance with company procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements including NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC), SOPs, O&M Manuals, PHMSA, and EPA regulations
- Identify, report, and respond to abnormal operating conditions, safety incidents, near misses, and emergency situations
- Support safe work permitting, contractor coordination, and maintenance contract management activities
- Manage workflow within Maximo including work identification, planning, procurement support, work order completion, and contractor coordination
- Assist with maintenance scheduling, backlog management, budget tracking, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Participate in environmental, safety, and technical optimization programs and maintain all required technical and regulatory training
- Support small project execution activities including estimating, work order preparation, contractor coordination, permitting, project tracking, and closeout documentation
- Promote and maintain high standards of Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental stewardship
- Provide guidance and direction to qualified employees during routine electrical controls-related activities
Qualifications
- High School Diploma required
- Minimum of 2 years of directly relevant technical training or work experience
- Enrollment in a two-year technical school or apprenticeship program at the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th level preferred
- Completion of a certified trades or technical school program considered an asset
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications and computer-based systems
- Experience using equipment related to the maintenance of electrical and control systems
- Familiarity with emergency response planning and procedures
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment with shared responsibilities
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships
- Commitment to safety, environmental compliance, and operational excellence
- Experience with PLCs and SCADA systems considered an asset
- Experience with gas measurement systems, analyzers, meters, and compressor station operations considered an asset
- Previous experience within the oil and gas industry, particularly high-pressure gas transmission operations, inspections, or commissioning preferred
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, shifts, standby rotations, and emergency call-outs as required
- Ability to travel occasionally, including overnight travel
- Must reside within 30 miles of the assigned reporting location
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather and environmental conditions
- Ability to safely perform physical tasks including climbing, lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, standing, walking, and working in high-noise environments
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work, follow procedures, and complete documentation accurately
- Ability to interpret and apply oral and written instructions, technical procedures, and operational guidelines effectively
