Job Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated Safety Specialist to support safe, responsible, reliable, and efficient operations with a focus on people. This role involves promoting a strong safety culture, collaborating with site teams, and providing technical expertise in health and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Promote a strong safety culture by engaging with employees and contractors, encouraging open discussions about safety concerns, and recognizing positive safety behaviors.
- Collaborate with site team members to ensure activities are completed safely and continuously look for ways to improve performance.
- Support and coach site operations in identifying, communicating, and managing safety hazards and risks.
- Provide coaching on effective execution of the safety management program and regulatory compliance processes.
- Provide effective field health and safety technical expertise in daily operations.
- Demonstrate visible safety leadership through frequent field visits, project support, and contractor orientation.
- Align contractor activities with safety standards and ensure seamless coordination among all parties involved.
- Track and communicate all field visits and assurance activities, ensuring timely completion of action items.
- Deliver weekly safety observations, analyze trends, and offer recommendations based on field visits and site performance evaluations.
- Support site leadership by contributing subject matter expertise to safety communication meetings.
- Provide onsite initial incident response and participate in event analysis as needed.
Qualifications:
- OSHA 30-hour certification
- First Aid / CPR trained and qualified
- Five (5) years of relevant Health & Safety work experience or a degree in safety with three (3) years of relevant experience
- Computer literate with good verbal and written communication skills
- Strong analytical skills and ability to work independently in a fast-paced setting
- Experience using defined processes for managing Health & Safety risks
- Accident & Incident investigation experience
- Energy industry experience; Renewables preferred
- Experience with OH&S regulations in the US, specifically electrical hazards and controls, is an asset
- Valid driver’s license
- Degree in a safety-related field
- Registered Safety Professional designation/Certified Safety Professional or other Professional Board Certification preferred
- Ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences
- Ability to complete climbing and working at heights certifications, self-rescue, and handle the physical demands associated with climbing wind turbines and working in confined spaces.
- Flexibility to work extended hours to manage work priorities, accommodate field schedules, and address stakeholder needs.
- Physical requirements include lifting 50 pounds, bending, stooping, crawling, ascending and descending ladders, standing for extended periods, working in inclement weather (Hot, Cold, Rain), and performing tasks involving pulling hand over hand, pushing, reaching above shoulder, repetitive motion, sitting, standing, walking, visual and hearing requirements.
