Job Overview
The Civil/Structural Engineer provides specialized civil engineering expertise and technical support for the design and construction of trenchless crossings and civil works for capital projects. The role also focuses on stewardship and continuous improvement of civil and trenchless construction standards. Trenchless crossings include horizontal directional drilling, micro-tunneling, auger boring, and direct pipe installations. Civil and structural works include foundations, concrete works, structural supports, earthworks, and survey.
This position is critical in interpreting design documents, supporting field execution, resolving construction issues, and ensuring all activities align with safety, integrity, and technical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide civil and trenchless engineering solutions for design and construction, offering technical support for projects
- Support early-stage project development by evaluating trenchless feasibility, constructability, ground conditions, and civil risk for new business opportunities
- Offer civil and structural guidance to project teams, including reviewing drawing packages, responding to requests for information, evaluating technical standard deviations, and managing change requests
- Ensure compliance with client quality, technical standards, and applicable industry standards
- Lead continuous improvement of civil and structural engineering standards, construction guidelines, and procedures
- Develop and implement formal and informal training programs to enhance understanding of civil and structural construction activities
- Strategize and contribute to technical investigations, failure analyses, and trials of new methods, materials, or technologies
- Promote wellness and safety culture by completing required safety training and participating in safety initiatives
- Communicate technical information effectively to ensure understanding among project teams and stakeholders
- Support the organization’s values of safety, integrity, respect, and high performance
Scope and Influence
- Exercises significant independent judgment and discretion in carrying out technical work within civil, trenchless, and structural disciplines
- Recommendations have broad implications and may commit the business unit to action; decisions must be technically sound even with limited testing capability
- Provides technical stewardship for large civil and trenchless infrastructure assets, where performance, constructability, and ground interaction are critical
- Leverages professional network and industry contacts to support high-quality engineering decisions
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field from a recognized university or college
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration, or actively pursuing registration, preferably in Alberta
- Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience in civil and trenchless crossing construction
- Proven ability to assess and address performance issues in civil and structural construction, balancing technical, business, risk, and financial considerations
- Strong experience using risk assessment to support complex technical decisions
- Demonstrated business acumen and ability to contribute to strategic planning, change management, and technical governance
- Strong organizational and critical thinking skills to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and stakeholder expectations
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for both internal and external audiences
- Experience contributing to standards development, technical governance, or industry working groups in civil/trenchless construction
- Field or owner-operator experience supporting trenchless construction, investigations, or failure analyses
Working Conditions
- Approximately 90% office-based, 10% field, shop, or operating facility exposure in all weather conditions
- Air travel within Canada and the US; occasional local travel using company or rental vehicles (10–20%)
- Potential exposure to moving mechanical parts, wet or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, electrical risk, and vibration
- Noise levels may exceed 90 dBA
Please note: Successful applicants will be employees of Raise, working at Enbridge facilities with both Enbridge and contract employees.
