The Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne (RDHM) is a major teaching hospital and works closely with universities including the University of Melbourne and RMIT to support dental education and clinical training.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Head of Unit – Dental Teaching Clinic (DTC) to lead the clinical, operational and educational activities of the Dental Teaching Clinic within Primary Care.

This leadership role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care while supporting dental education and training programs for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The role works closely with academic partners, clinical teams and hospital leadership to ensure effective service delivery and student supervision.

You will play a key role in clinical governance, service improvement, workforce leadership and collaboration with university partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the clinical and operational management of the Dental Teaching Clinic.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred dental services aligned with OHV standards and public oral health objectives.
  • Provide leadership and support to clinicians supervising dental students.
  • Work collaboratively with University of Melbourne and RMIT convenors and coordinators to support clinical education programs.
  • Oversee patient management processes within the student clinic, ensuring efficient patient flow and appropriate case allocation.
  • Manage staff performance, professional development and workforce capability.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control, clinical governance, quality improvement and safety standards.
  • Support the development of clinical pathways and service improvement initiatives.
  • Manage clinical incidents and patient feedback in accordance with organisational policies.
  • Represent the Dental Teaching Clinic in internal committees and university partnerships.

About You

You are an experienced clinician and leader who is passionate about education, patient-centred care and public oral health.

Essential

  • Bachelor of Dental Science (or equivalent) with current AHPRA registration
  • Demonstrated experience supervising or working with dental students
  • Experience leading and managing clinical teams
  • Strong understanding of infection control, clinical governance and quality improvement
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Knowledge of public oral health systems and patient care processes
  • Victorian Employee Working with Children Check

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualifications in management, public health or dental specialty
  • Experience in teaching environments or academic partnerships
  • Experience with patient management systems (e.g., Titanium)
  • Experience in research, service improvement or project management
