Lead and drive the safety-first culture on an important regional project.


About the role

Reporting to the Construction Manager, this is a senior leadership opportunity where you will be responsible for setting CMC’s strategic direction and operational delivery of the health and safety agenda across the Lismore FRP project.

You will be accountable for embedding a high-performance safety culture that meets legislative requirements, industry best practice, and our commitment to zero harm.


  • Oversight of all H&S systems and initiatives, coaching and guiding project leadership teams, leading investigations, and driving continuous improvement;
  • Maintaining strong site engagement, playing an integral role in ensuring we meet our legal obligations while reinforcing a culture where safety is proactively owned at all levels;
  • Providing direct support and guidance to site-based Safety Advisors, ensuring compliance with SWMS, facilitating task observations, supporting WHS audits, and championing frontline risk management activities;
  • Acting as both strategist and operational leader, working closely with the construction team, helping maintain effective relationships with clients, regulators, and subcontractors;
  • By combining operational oversight with site-level safety leadership, ensuring risks are identified, addressed, and mitigated throughout the full lifecycle of project delivery.

 

About you

  • You hold relevant professional certifications such as Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (WHS), Diploma of Work Health and Safety, or equivalent;
  • Have in-depth knowledge of Australian safety legislation and standards, including WHS Act 2011 and relevant regulations;
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role within the civil construction industry, with a focus on infrastructure projects;
  • Proven track record of developing, implementing, and managing HSE management systems and procedures in accordance with Australian regulations;
  • Experience conducting risk assessments, safety audits, incident investigations, and implementing corrective actions within a construction setting;
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills with the ability to lead and motivate a diverse team of HSE professionals, subcontractors, and site personnel;
  • Experience in providing health & safety guidance, training, and mentoring to project teams to ensure a strong safety culture;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with stakeholders at all levels, including clients, subcontractors, and regulatory authorities;
  • Proficient in conducting hazard identification and risk management processes specific to civil construction activities, including earthworks, road construction, and structural works.
  • Familiarity with lead indicators, performance metrics, and benchmarking tools to track/measure HSE performance across projects;
  • Thorough understanding of WHS legislation, codes of practice, and industry standards applicable to projects across Australia.
