The opportunity

We are seeking expressions of interest from candidates who are interested in pursuing a career within the Airport Fire Team. Selected applicants will be invited to an assessment centre held in August/September 2024. While there are currently no vacancies, this process enables the team to build a pool of pre-qualified candidates who are ready and able to take on an opportunity when one becomes available and start their basic training.

As a Fire Fighter the key responsibilities will be to carry out operational duties to ensure the constant readiness of the Airport Fire Service and the safety of airport users and personnel at all times, including responding to emergency situations as they arise, maintaining vehicles and equipment, and various routine tasks to ensure the operational integrity of the aerodrome. The team responds to medical emergencies, structure and vegetation fires, vehicle and industrial accidents, hazardous material spills and a range of aircraft emergencies.

To excel in this role you will possess:

  • Excellent customer services skills, the ability to effectively communicate with people in a variety of situations, and a calm, friendly and resilient nature.
  • Thrive being part of a team and enjoy working with a diverse group of people, with an energetic approach to work combined with a high degree of common sense.
  • While previous emergency service experience may be advantageous, it is not a requirement as full induction and ongoing training will be provided to the successful applicant.
  • As the airport is a 24/7 operation, availability to work a shift roster is paramount. The shifts are 2 days – 8am-6pm, 2 nights – 6pm-8am, then the remaining + 3 days off

In order to be considered for this role you must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Be physically fit and healthy, able to pass and maintain ongoing medical clearance checks and physical competency assessments
  • You must hold a minimum of New Zealand Class 2 drivers licence at commencement of role
  • Be able to learn on the job, follow instructions and work well in a structured environment
  • Ideally, you will already have some work experience and are familiar with shift work
  • Be of sufficiently good character to pass the checks required to obtain a Civil Aviation Authority Airport Identity Card and pass a criminal background check.
