Chandler Macleod, in collaboration with Santos, is currently seeking a Cost Controller to join the team located in Brisbane, QLD. The Cost Controller is responsible for the establishment and maintenance of project cost control systems, reviewing and auditing financial transactions, and preparation of project cost reports including analysis of trends. The Cost Controller will also support preparation of budget documentation for both Santos and Joint Venture approval and for project reporting.

This position works closely with the KPS FSO Project and the Project Controls Lead for Non-Operated/Portfolio to provide expert technical advice and guidance to ensure a consistent approach for cost management is achieved and where required, supports the development of documents, processes and tools to support the Project as it approaches various Decision Points. This role will also engage with each contracted organisation to ensure timely and accurate progress / cost reporting is provided to allow identification and management of emerging trends / issues within each contractor’ s project.

Core Accountabilities include:

Provide cost control advice, analysis and support to the Project Team including:

  • Variance analysis and investigation;
  • Costing, forecasting and statistics;
  • Reporting;
  • Process improvements;
  • Delegation of Authority administration;

Monitor and report on capital project expenditures, commitments and forecasts for the Project Team including:

  • Establish and maintain appropriate Project Controls
  • Prepare Budgets and AFE’s
  • Ensure costs are correctly allocated in conjunction with Finance;
  • Establish appropriate accruals and in conjunction with finance, ensure that these accruals are posted
  • Ensure final forecast costs and commitments for each of the key activity areas are current;
  • Prepare cost control reports for each activity
  • Comply with provisions of contracts, Joint Venture Agreements and with Delegation of Authority

Review Contractor(s) deliverables and regular reports and highlight any issues or concerns to the Project Leadership Team; work with Contractor(s) to ensure appropriate Cost Control and Cost Reporting

Work with the Project Controls Lead and/or Planner to ensure cost forecasts align with the Project Schedule and upcoming activities;

Assist in the enhancement and development of systems to provide accurate and timely forecasts of costs and commitments;

In conjunction with Santos Accounts Payable, ensure that the receipting and payment of invoices is conducted in a timely manner;

Support raising of SES’s in SAP in support of invoices and also raise PR’s for new Purchase Orders;

Support preparation of Cost Breakdown Structure within SAP, in conjunction with Finance; and,

Assist with implementation and maintenance of cost control best practices across the KPS FSO Project.


This assignment is initially offered for 12 months, engaged via Chandler Macleod. 

Location for this assignment is Brisbane, QLD, working full-time office hours.


About You

  • Hold a tertiary qualification in Commerce, Engineering, Project Management or a related discipline.
  • Have a demonstrated track record in the successful completion of cost control tasks with limited supervision. Cost Control in a project environment considered a distinct advantage
  • Have in-depth knowledge of project change control and cost forecasting
  • Proficient in oral and written communications
  • Effective interpersonal skills required
  • Strong Microsoft Excel experience
  • Extensive experience in Cost Control and/or Project Controls
  • Exposure to extractive industries with oil and gas experience considered a distinct advantage
  • Familiarity with cost control packages such as Prism, as well as Power BI desirable.
