Carers NSW is the peak non-government organisation for carers in NSW, part of the National Carer Network and a member of Carers Australia. The organisation supports and advocates for carers of family members and/or friends who may be living with disability, mental illness, health related and/or chronic conditions, drug and alcohol related, and those who may be frail due to ageing. Carers NSW is the dedicated Carer Gateway Service Provider across Hunter New England, the Central Coast and North Coast of NSW

Carers NSW is a not-for-profit registered charity and company limited by guarantee. The organisation is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors in accordance with the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 (Cth). The Board oversees the activities of Carers NSW and draws on the expertise and insights of Directors to achieve its strategic priorities.

Carers NSW is seeking applications from individuals who have a commitment to excellence and a desire to contribute their skills and expertise to effective governance and the organisation’s success. Successful applicants will bring alignment with the purpose of the organisation and have capacity to devote time and energy to the position of a Board Director.

Directors are appointed as individuals, not as nominees or representatives of organisations or a particular sector. They are not remunerated but their reasonable expenses may be covered.

Time commitment

Meetings are held at least six times a year on the last Thursday of every second month and usually last from three to four hours. In addition, Board workshops may be scheduled from time to time as required. There is also the opportunity for Directors to serve on Board committees and working groups.

Eligibility Criteria

Essential criteria – all candidates:

  • Understanding of the experience of being a carer and the issues impacting on carers
  • Leadership experience in the non-government and/or human services sectors
  • Demonstrated experience in governance in an Executive or Non-Executive capacity
  • Financial literacy that is sufficient to understand Board/Director accountability
  • Strategic corporate governance capability, including long-term planning and direction setting
  • Ability to contribute to the vision and mission of Carers NSW, strategic long-term planning and organisational sustainability
  • Commitment to leveraging networks to support the vision and mission of Carers NSW

Priority skills – candidates must have at least one of the following:

  • Experience in developing corporate partnerships and sponsorship
  • Experience in developing and driving fundraising in not-for-profit environment
  • Experience in grant seeking from Government and philanthropic organisations
  • Experience in business development and/or revenue diversification
  • Experience in leveraging digital technologies, including AI, to improve organisational effectiveness
  • Senior/executive level technology or technology consulting experience
  • Research expertise or experience applying research insights to policy, advocacy, or strategic decision making

Lived experience / diversity representation (at least one desirable):

  • Identifies as First Nations
  • Young carer (18-25 years)
  • Lived experience as a carer
  • Culturally and linguistically diverse background
  • Regional/rural experience

General eligibility:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Not bankrupt or insolvent
  • Not an employee of, or in receipt of fees from, Carers NSW
  • No disqualifying offences as defined in section 46.1(i) of the Carers NSW Constitution
  • Not ineligible under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) or the ACNC Act 2012 (Cth)
  • Willing to undertake a National Police Check, Working with Children Check, and hold a current Director ID

Successful applicants will be provided with an induction to Carers NSW and support and mentoring from other Directors, as required.
