Brisbane City Council's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traineeship Pathway program provides an opportunity to gain hands-on conservation experience while working towards a nationally recognised qualification, Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management.

This traineeship is based within the Restoration and Offsets team, part of Council's Natural Environment, Water and Sustainability area. The team plays an important role in protecting and restoring Brisbane's natural environment through habitat restoration, biodiversity conservation and environmental management programs.

About the Team- Restoration and Offsets

The Restoration and Offsets team works across Brisbane to support the restoration and protection of natural areas, waterways and biodiversity values. The team delivers environmental projects that contribute to healthier ecosystems and supports the long-term conservation of Brisbane's natural environment.

As a trainee, you'll gain hands-on experience supporting environmental restoration and conservation activities while working alongside experienced environmental professionals.

Your duties may include:

  • Assisting with weed identification and weed management activities.
  • Supporting habitat restoration and revegetation projects.
  • Assisting with creek and waterway rehabilitation activities.
  • Supporting the maintenance and improvement of natural areas and bushland environments.
  • Learning environmental monitoring and land management techniques.
  • Participating in field-based conservation activities across various locations throughout Brisbane.
  • Assisting with environmental projects that contribute to biodiversity conservation outcomes.
  • Working alongside Council officers, contractors and stakeholders involved in environmental management initiatives.

What we’re looking for:

  • Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Interested in conservation, environmental management and caring for Country.
  • Reliable, motivated and willing to learn.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a range of environmental conditions.
  • Able to work as part of a team and follow directions.
  • Committed to completing training and assessment requirements throughout the program.
  • Able to travel across Brisbane as required.

After completing the traineeship, you’ll have:

  • A nationally recognised qualification (Cert III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management).
  • Hands-on experience in conservation projects.
  • The skills to apply for roles within Council or beyond.

Please note that you will be required to undertake a pre-employment medical assessment to assess your ability to perform the genuine occupational requirements of the role.
