Development Services facilitates high-quality, sustainable development outcomes for Brisbane, through efficient and professional development assessment and management processes, systems and practices.

The Role

The Principal Building and Construction Management Officer lead the delivery of proactive building and construction management services across Brisbane, with a focus on achieving quality development outcomes, resolving complex site issues and supporting conditions fulfilment with relevant planning and environmental legislation. The role partners with industry, assessment managers, Councillors and the community to identify and manage risks associated with building and construction activity, mediate practical outcomes and respond effectively to Council and community concerns.

The position also provides leadership, mentoring and technical guidance to the Building and Construction Management Team, including supporting collaboration between Building and Construction Liaison Officers and Building and Construction Coordination Officers. It contributes to continuous improvement by reviewing processes, policies and business practices, preparing high-quality reports and briefs, and supporting evidence-based decision making for regulatory, legal and executive purposes.

To be successful you will have:

Demonstrated leadership capability, including the ability to role model Council’s values, foster a performance-focused culture and provide direction, coaching and mentoring to team members.

Strong experience in building and construction management, compliance, investigation or a related regulatory environment, including managing complex site-based issues and delivering practical outcomes.

Procedures and regulatory requirements relating to building and construction activity.

Proven ability to negotiate, mediate and resolve complex or sensitive matters while maintaining a strong customer focus and achieving quality outcomes.

Excellent organisational and time management skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and deliver agreed outcomes across multiple matters.

 A continuous improvement mindset, with demonstrated ability to review processes, contribute to policy and business improvement initiatives, and support more effective end-to-end service delivery.

Ability to provide clear, accurate and authoritative written and verbal advice to a range of audiences.
