City Legal is a specialist provider of legal services to Brisbane City Council. We provide a comprehensive range of cost-effective legal services, adding value to Council's core business and major projects.

The Role

This is a unique opportunity to be part of one of the busiest planning and environment litigation practices in Queensland and work alongside an experienced and established team in the conduct of Planning and Environment Court litigation. 

In this role you will provide strategic advice and Court representation to Council in the conduct of a large volume of Planning and Environment Court proceedings, whilst receiving mentorship and guidance from the highly regarded planning and environment group within City Legal’s Planning and Development Team. 

This is an exciting opportunity for a litigation lawyer looking to take on a challenge and to gain far more on-the-ground experience than their peers.

We are looking for a highly collaborative and motivated solicitor with highly developed communication skills looking to build their career and to develop a speciality in planning and development law.

In this role you will:

  • conduct litigation in the Planning and Environment Court on behalf of Brisbane City Council
  • prepare matters for hearing in the Planning and Environment Court, instruct barristers where appropriate and appear in Court as an advocate
  • provide specialist legal skills, advocacy and advice on a wide range of critical and sensitive issues to Council
  • conduct and advise on a variety of planning and environment matters on behalf of Brisbane City Council
  • participate in the delivery of legal services with respect to planning and development matters as part of a specialist team

To be successful you will have:

  • must be admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and hold a current Practicing Certificate from the Queensland Law Society.
  • knowledge and experience in planning law, with experience in the conduct of Planning and Environment Court litigation or experience in the conduct of general litigation with a willingness to learn in a fast-paced and hands on way;
  • strong advocacy skills, with the ability to represent Council in Court and lead negotiations
  • high-level communication skills and the ability to build relationships with senior stakeholders
  • developed negotiation and mediation skills;
  • demonstrated leadership and mentoring experience.
