City Planning and Design develops strategic planning policy, quality urban design creative outcomes and key legislation including the Brisbane City Plan 2014. Monitoring Brisbane’s growth under the Brisbane City Plan 2014 and South East Queensland Regional Plan is critical for making the future of the city happen, aligned to the themes of Brisbane Vision 2031.

Brisbane City Council’s Strategic Planning section is made up of a diverse group of planning and other specialists working together to create better places for Brisbane.
Within this section, the Heritage Policy team is a multi-disciplinary group of experts—including historians, planners, architects and policy specialists—who provide strategic planning, policy and other advice to identify, conserve and promote Brisbane’s heritage places and its unique character.
About the Role
We’re looking for a passionate and knowledgeable professional to join our Heritage Policy team as a Principal Heritage Officer. This is a unique opportunity to lead a team that is shaping the cultural heritage and character of Brisbane.
If you are an experienced leader with a background in architecture, urban design, urban planning, or a related discipline—and a strong interest in cultural heritage planning—this role offers the perfect opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
As Principal Heritage Officer, you will:
- lead a small team of Heritage Policy professionals to provide expert advice on conservation, heritage and character management
- coordinate and lead a range of heritage planning projects and work programs
- provide advice on conservation, heritage, and character policy
- deliver secretariat functions for Council’s Heritage Advisory Committee
- oversee local heritage place nominations and investigations, as well as the Local Heritage Places online platform
- provide planning and policy advice for Brisbane City Plan 2014 overlays
- respond to heritage enquiries and support a diverse range of internal and external customers.
To be successful you will have:
- proven leadership capabilities and a customer-focused mindset
- excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- a collaborative approach to supporting and guiding team members through sensitive and challenging work
- demonstrated ability to manage complex projects, develop plans and budgets, and balance competing priorities
- strong knowledge of cultural heritage conservation, including legislation and best practice
- experience working within Brisbane’s planning and development system.
