We are Australia’s largest local government, with over 9,000 employees, an annual budget of almost $4 billion and assets exceeding $34 billion. We are dedicated to ensuring the Brisbane of tomorrow is even better than the Brisbane of today by nurturing innovation, valuing sustainability and supporting strong economic growth. Infrastructure Services Group (ISG) brings together Council’s asset management, infrastructure planning, design, project management, construction, services, maintenance and transport operations, and is committed to an inclusive culture that embraces our differences. Planning and Design is a team of more than 200 professionals with extensive experience and a strong record of excellence in planning, designing and documenting civil and civic infrastructure projects for Council. As a professional services branch within ISG, we deliver successful design and infrastructure planning outcomes that balance cost and environmental considerations with community-friendly infrastructure, partnering with program areas across Council and contributing to almost all infrastructure works delivered.

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Environmental Officer to join our Planning and Environment team and help maintain the specialist environmental capability essential to delivering Council’s infrastructure program. With the team operating at full capacity and facing increasing project demand, this permanent opportunity will see you provide a broad range of environmental services that support the planning, design, construction and maintenance of our city’s assets. You will work closely with clients across multiple projects, often medium to high-risk, to ensure sustainable development meets all state legislative and regulatory requirements while completing environmental assessments against relevant legislation, local laws and policies. In this fast‑paced role, you will deliver tailored environmental advice that enables projects to remain compliant and progress on time, providing specialist technical guidance to support the wider team. This position plays a critical role in preventing delays, safeguarding project quality and compliance, and ensuring Council continues to meet its statutory obligations across a growing portfolio of work.

What will you be doing:

  • leading, organising and overseeing the environmental components of multiple projects simultaneously
  • delivering environmental assessments, impact reports and compliance tasks
  • providing specialist environmental advice to guide project decisions
  • applying legislation and policy to ensure projects achieve full statutory compliance
  • managing multidisciplinary projects with internal and external stakeholders
  • enhancing environmental systems, procedures and strategies, and
  • mentoring junior staff to build capability across the team.

To be considered, you will have:

  • a relevant environmental degree and current c‑class driver licence
  • strong experience in environmental assessments, plans, audits and risk management
  • solid knowledge of environmental legislation and its practical application
  • proven ability to deliver complex projects to agreed time, cost and quality standards
  • excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and problem‑solving skills, and
  • experience applying innovative environmental strategies in an urban context.

This is an excellent opportunity to thrive in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple medium to high-risk projects while providing technical guidance that supports a high performing team.

A criminal history may also be undertaken on preferred applicants. A criminal history does not necessarily preclude an applicant from appointment.
