Our Team – International Relations and Multicultural Affairs

Join Brisbane City Council’s International Relations and Multicultural Affairs (IRMA) team and play a key role in delivering projects, programs and events that create economic, civic and cultural impact, aligned with the bold vision of the Economic Development Plan 2031.

This is your opportunity to drive high‑profile initiatives such as Sister City partnerships, business missions, mayoral visits, and the award‑winning Asia Pacific Cities Summit (APCS) & Mayors’ Forum. You will also champion Brisbane’s multicultural programs (including the Lord Mayor’s Multicultural Business Awards and Scholarship Program), fostering diversity, inclusion, and international engagement across the city.

We provide strategic leadership, guidance and support for all international activities undertaken on behalf of Brisbane City Council. As the official liaison for international contact and communication, we ensure opportunities for Brisbane are maximised, coordinated and strategically driven, while creating meaningful connections for Brisbane’s multicultural business communities. In this role, you will collaborate closely alongside Council’s Brisbane 2032 Host City team and the Economic Development team, working at the forefront of initiatives that shape Brisbane’s global future.

The Role

This is your opportunity to curate, lead and deliver the APCS & Mayors’ Forum, both in Brisbane and in offshore host cities. This includes strategic design, program development, operational delivery and global positioning, ensuring alignment with IRMA’s strategy and Council’s long‑term vision.

The role is pivotal in boosting and positioning Brisbane’s brand globally, strengthening international relationships, and showcasing the city’s strategic assets, best‑practice initiatives and signature programs to mayors and city leaders from around the world, ahead of the 2032 Games and beyond.

You will provide high‑level leadership and oversight of this internationally recognised summit, negotiating sponsorships, managing senior stakeholders, managing a complex budget, leading the Secretariat, and driving continuous innovation in delivery models, systems and processes to achieve tangible economic, trade and investment outcomes for Brisbane.

This position also requires a deep understanding of the complexities and cultural sensitivities involved in delivering a major global summit. APCS has historically addressed major regional and global issues making this role critical to shaping meaningful city‑to‑city dialogue and outcomes.

To be successful you will have:

  • proven leadership and project management capability delivering complex, high-profile international programs or events
  • strong track record in international partnerships, business development and securing commercial/sponsorship outcomes
  • financial acumen with experience managing large budgets, forecasting and driving value and revenue opportunities
  • exceptional stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence across government, industry and international networks
  • strategic thinking with experience in governance, risk management and leading high-performing teams in complex environments

It is highly desirable that you have experience in event and project management principles, including the use of project management software, hold an industry-recognised qualification, and have the ability to speak a second language.
