Our Business

Brisbane City Council is one of Australia's largest local governments and one of the city's largest employers. With a commitment to delivering services that keep Brisbane moving, growing and thriving, Council offers meaningful work, career development opportunities and the ability to make a genuine impact on the community.

Our Branch

The City Planning and Design Branch plays a key role in shaping Brisbane's future through evidence-based planning, research, analysis and urban design. The Research and Modelling Unit provides strategic insights that support planning and development outcomes across the city through innovative spatial analysis, modelling and visualisation technologies.

The Virtual Brisbane 3D Urban Model is a critical planning tool used to assess development outcomes, support strategic planning initiatives and communicate future city growth to stakeholders across Council, industry and the community.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior 3D Urban Modeller to lead the ongoing development, maintenance and operation of Brisbane's Virtual 3D Urban Model and contribute to innovative planning and modelling outcomes for one of Australia's fastest-growing capital cities.

Reporting to the Senior Research Officer, you will be responsible for managing and enhancing Council's 3D urban modelling program, creating and maintaining detailed 3D content, responding to requests for new model components and ensuring the ongoing integrity and functionality of the platform.

You will work closely with planners, researchers, GIS specialists and other stakeholders to support strategic planning initiatives, urban growth modelling and local area planning projects. The role also involves providing model demonstrations, technical advice and specialist support to both internal and external stakeholders.

This is a highly collaborative and technically focused role that requires strong analytical skills, a passion for spatial technologies and the ability to translate complex technical information into meaningful planning outcomes.

What are we looking for?

  • demonstrated skills and experience in detailed 3D modelling within an urban planning environment
  • strong knowledge and practical experience in 3D Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Building Information Modelling (BIM) and urban visualisation technologies
  • advanced proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and procedural or parametric modelling software such as CityEngine or equivalent platforms
  • demonstrated experience using 3D modelling software such as 3ds Max, Blender or similar applications
  • ability to analyse and interpret demographic, housing development, infrastructure and spatial datasets to support planning outcomes
  • highly developed written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical concepts to diverse audiences
  • experience providing model demonstrations, technical advice and stakeholder support
  • strong project management skills with the ability to coordinate competing priorities and deliver outcomes within agreed timeframes
  • ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
  • demonstrated ability to lead performance through providing direction, feedback, support and mentoring to others

Mandatory Requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in Urban Planning, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Spatial Science, Geography, Design, Social Sciences or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.

Highly Desirable

  • Experience using game engine technologies such as Unreal Engine or similar visualisation platforms.
  • Experience with data automation and programming tools such as FME, Python, JavaScript, C++ and/or Power BI.
  • Experience working within local government, urban planning, city analytics or related environments.
