City Planning and Design develops strategic planning policy, economic strategies, quality urban design creative outcomes and key legislation including the Brisbane City Plan 2014.

The Regional & Citywide Planning team is responsible for demographic research and analysis of current and emerging land use trends, including urban growth modelling. This includes monitoring the growth of south-east Queensland to deliver Brisbane City Council's long-term community plan for the city Brisbane Vision 2031.

The Role

We are looking for a talented and dedicated Senior 3D Urban Modeller to lead the development and maintenance of the Virtual Brisbane program of work. This includes the 3D base model, associated data and workflows. Virtual Brisbane sits under Research and Modelling Unit, is part of the Regional and Citywide Planning team which use technology and evidence-based research to ensure Brisbane remains a sustainable, highly liveable city of the future.

We are looking for someone with a background in the built environment industry (e.g. including but not limited to urban planning) who is eager to work in a dynamic multidisciplinary environment to build and maintain a digital twin focussed on city planning and economic development.

You will be required to: 

  • be the technical lead for a small but highly innovative and motivated team
  • procure, project manage, develop and maintain the 2025 photogrammetry 3D base model update  
  • develop and maintain data and workflows related to city planning and economic development 
  • project manage and create still image renders, video fly-throughs, extended reality and digital interactive experiences generated via game engine workflows 
  • analyse and interrogate development application BIM in context of City Plan 2014 and the surrounding built and natural environment 
  • contribute to evidence-based research for the development of precinct plans and city planning research projects 
  • process, report and monitor requests from customers internal and external to Council 
  • be active in market research and industry events for the ongoing development and utilisation of Virtual Brisbane.

To be successful you will have: 

  • high competency with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online/Portal (i.e. 3D GIS) 
  • demonstrated experience in urban analytics 
  • basic competency and understanding of the benefits of BIM (e.g. Revit), parametric modelling (e.g. ArcGIS Urban), 3D modelling (e.g. 3ds Max), game engines (e.g. Unreal Engine) and data automation (e.g. FME or python desirable).
  • Microsoft suite competency (i.e. Excel), PowerBI desirable
  • public speaking and stakeholder engagement experience
  • well-developed interpersonal skills and experience in providing customer service and technical information and advice to a range of customers and stakeholders
  • a good understanding of data governance.
