Salary Range: Band 1 AUD: $70,296 to $74,624 + Superannuation (Remuneration stated is for the full-time positions)

Work type: Permanent Flexible part time – minimum 25 hours per week

No two days are the same at Brisbane City Council’s libraries and we are looking for candidates with a high level of flexibility, able to adapt to changing environments and with the capacity to work across multiple library locations within the relief pool.

Brisbane City Council Libraries provide a wide range of services including early literacy and reading programs, computer training, events and workshops. The Role

These are entry-level roles based in the relief pool providing support across several Library locations. We encourage people who aspire to become Library Technicians or Librarians to apply.

Our Library Assistants provide a high standard of service to our customers and perform functions which assist in the smooth operation of the branch. This includes providing courteous and efficient service to customers at the circulation desk, handling customer queries in person, by phone and email as well as several operational and backroom tasks.

A day in the life of a Library Assistant can include:

  • developing your understanding of library services and products
  • delivering core library programs including IT skills, literacy and children's programs
  • proactively providing support and advice in a challenging public library environment
  • encouraging customers to utilise a wide range of library services
  • confident in the ability to engage with a diverse range of customers and situations
  • manual handling, such as maintaining collections and moving furniture
  • working effectively in a dynamic team and environment and providing support to your team leader.

Please note: To meet customer needs, this role will require you to be rostered weekends and evenings in addition to regular business hours. This includes Saturdays, some weekday evenings and some Sundays.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • collaborative, flexible team approach with an interest in continuous improvement
  • well-developed customer service skills with the ability to respond confidently to enquiries for positive customer interactions
  • a passion for libraries, some understanding of a modern public library service, products and collections and the ability to share your passion and encourage enthusiasm for reading with others
  • sound interpersonal and communications skills, including presentation to small and large groups
  • organisational skills able to participate in the circulation of duties i.e. shelving, sorting books, customer service desk
  • sounds skills in IT and the ability to help others
  • commitment to actively contributing to a Zero Harm culture where safety is everyone's responsibility.

It is a mandatory requirement the successful candidate will have a Working with Children Blue Card prior to commencing in this role.  

There is an expectation the successful applicant can travel to various library branches within the inner city and greater Brisbane region.
