Our Branch 

NEWS plays an important role in managing Brisbane's natural environment, open spaces, parklands, and waterways that help define our subtropical lifestyle. NEWS is a diverse group of planners, engineers, scientists, project managers, communication and engagement specialists and support people. 

The Role 

As Program Officer, Biodiversity Planning you will contribute to the development and provision of strategic and operational policy advice and the successful delivery of key program outcomes, with a focus on biodiversity planning.  

Council manages over 10,000 hectares of natural areas including Mt Coot-tha Reserve and Karawatha Forest. It is essential to ensure these areas are protected through a balance of projects and policy work that effectively manage biodiversity and significant ecosystems and species as well as outdoor recreational use of these areas. 

To do this you will regularly liaise with stakeholders across Council as well as promote partnerships with external stakeholders including landowners, industry, community groups and government agencies that contribute to the protection and management of biodiversity in the city. 

Strong stakeholder engagement is therefore essential to this role and a collaborative spirit, to ensure policy and project goals are met, as we work together to maintain and nurture our natural areas and biodiversity across the city.  

To be successful in this role you will have: 

  • Broad experience and knowledge of nature conservation, land use planning and other legislation related to sustainable land management and the protection of biodiversity. 
  • Broad experience in researching, formulating and implementing policies and strategies relating to sustainable land management and biodiversity protection. 
  • Broad experience in developing and managing stakeholder engagement, influencing, making decisions and motivating others towards the achievement of key work priorities. 
  • Broad experience in managing competing priorities, facilitating and exercise discretion in dealing with sensitive, complex and contentious issues. 
  • Broad experience in negotiations, delivering high level written and oral communication, together with well-developed interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to contribute to team direction, give and receive feedback and achieve agreed performance standards in order to contribute to a culture of performance excellence 

Desirable 

A tertiary qualification or experience in environmental science, environmental planning, environmental management or other relevant discipline are desirable but not mandatory.
