Applications are now open for enthusiastic candidates that are passionate about green space and are looking to kick-start a career in horticulture within Brisbane City Council’s 2026 Traineeship Pathway program.

As a Horticulture Trainee you will receive in-class training, professional development and on-the-job-learning with experienced trainers and mentors and be involved in a range of exciting projects to be delivered in our beautiful parks. 

Initially based at the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, during the 12-month traineeship participants may gain exposure to different green spaces across Council.

In this role, we will give you the training, support and mentoring you need to get involved in:

  • maintenance of parks, streetscapes and gardens
  • plant identification
  • pruning, protection and planting of trees and shrubs
  • control of weeds, pests and diseases
  • operating and maintaining machinery and equipment
  • keeping public areas safe and clean.

 You don’t need prior experience in horticulture to apply, and we’d love to hear from you if you:

  • have a passion for horticulture
  • take pride and ownership of your work outcomes
  • enjoy working outdoors
  • adhere to Workplace Health & Safety practices
  • have the capacity to work and study, with the ability to successfully complete required training modules
  • have good communication skills including problem solving
  • enjoy working in a team environment.

You may be required to undertake a pre-employment medical assessment to assess your ability to perform the genuine occupational requirements of the role.
