Salary Range: Band 7 $132,572 - $144,942 + Superannuation

The Role

The Principal Risk and Governance Officer leads the strategic development and continuous improvement of risk, governance, and audit frameworks across the branch and value stream. Operating as a senior advisor and thought leader, the role drives a proactive risk culture, ensures alignment with enterprise-wide frameworks and influences executive decision-making. The position plays a role in shaping governance maturity and embedding risk intelligence into strategic planning and operational delivery.

To be successful you will have:

  • Ability to contribute to team direction, give and receive feedback and achieve agreed performance standards in order to contribute to a culture of performance excellence.
  • Highly developed business and commercial acumen with an excellent ability to achieve effective results in a complex and evolving organisation.
  • Demonstrated expertise in enterprise risk management, governance, and audit frameworks, with a proven ability to lead strategic initiatives that uplift organisational maturity and embed risk intelligence into decision-making.
  • Strong strategic advisory and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesise complex information, identify systemic issues, and provide high-level advice to executives, governance committees, and elected officials.
  • Proven ability to influence and collaborate across diverse stakeholder groups, including executive leaders, program teams, legal and finance professionals, and external regulators, to drive alignment and deliver integrated governance outcomes.
  • Experience leading or contributing to organisational transformation initiatives, including digital enablement, process modernisation, or ERP implementation, with a focus on embedding governance and risk considerations.
  • Demonstrated leadership in building capability and fostering a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement, including mentoring others and modelling Council’s Leadership Blueprint and values.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing and presenting high-level reports, risk insights, and recommendations to executive forums and governance bodies.
