City Planning and Economic Development Services develops strategic planning policy, economic strategies, quality urban design creative outcomes and key legislation including the Brisbane City Plan 2014. Monitoring Brisbane’s growth under the Brisbane City Plan 2014 and South East Queensland Regional Plan is critical for making the future of the city happen, aligned to the themes of Brisbane Vision 2031.

The Role
The Urban Planner position within Brisbane City Council’s City Planning and Sustainability division plays a key role in delivering sustainable planning and development outcomes. The role involves assessing development applications, providing technical planning advice, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and Council policies. It requires strong customer service skills to liaise with internal teams, external stakeholders, and the development industry, while balancing community needs and regulatory requirements.
This position offers opportunities to work across Planning Services and Development Assurance sections. Responsibilities include managing low-to-medium risk applications, preparing reports and recommendations, participating in court-directed mediations, and using electronic systems for application reviews. The role demands proactive professional development and collaboration to achieve operational targets and maintain high standards of service delivery.
To be successful you will have:
- Experience in applying best practice in planning, built environment, infrastructure, and/or environmental disciplines
- Strong ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation, policies, and processes
- Proven skills in managing workloads and competing priorities effectively
- Well-developed interpersonal and negotiation skills to influence outcomes in complex environments
- High-level proficiency in written communication and commonly used computer systems.
