Our Branch
The Planning and Design branch is a 200‑plus strong team of specialised professionals dedicated to delivering high‑quality civil and civic infrastructure design for Council. As a key professional services branch within Infrastructure Services, the team plays a central role in shaping Brisbane’s built environment—balancing cost, environmental sustainability and community needs to produce practical, people‑focused infrastructure solutions.
Working closely with a wide range of Council program areas, Planning and Design contributes to almost every major infrastructure project delivered across the city, supported by expertise spanning built and natural environments, engineering, land acquisition and technology services.
The Role
As an Urban Planner within Brisbane City Council’s Planning and Design branch, you’ll provide technical leadership across a broad range of urban planning activities. You'll prepare planning reports, conduct due diligence investigations, manage development applications, and lead site inspections, delivering high‑quality technical work with autonomy and expertise. Your role ensures planning projects are completed efficiently and in line with legislation, Council policies, and best‑practice planning principles.

With direct influence on the city’s growth and development, this role involves strong collaboration across Council teams, engagement with the community and elected members, and contributing to the delivery of planning outcomes that shape a thriving, sustainable Brisbane.
To be successful you will have:
- demonstrated expertise in statutory urban planning and development assessment, including managing complex applications
- strong ability to lead and coordinate multidisciplinary projects to meet time, cost and quality objectives
- high‑level written and verbal communication skills, including report writing, negotiation and stakeholder engagement
- thorough knowledge of relevant planning legislation, regulations and contemporary planning approaches
- ability to collaborate effectively, provide guidance to junior staff, and contribute to a high‑performance team culture.
Benefits of working for Council include:
- flexible working hours, and flexible arrangements
- free gym and wellness centre
- award winning superannuation fund
- generous leave provisions
- competitive salary.
