Environment, Parks and Sustainability Services unites diverse teams dedicated to caring for our natural environment, driving sustainability outcomes, and working with the community to build a resilient city. Within this area, Natural Environment, Waterways and Sustainability (NEWS) plays a vital role in preserving Brisbane’s parklands, open spaces, and waterways—key to our distinctive subtropical way of life. NEWS is a collaborative and multidisciplinary team, including planners, engineers, scientists, project managers, communication and engagement specialists and support people.
About the role
As the Senior Program Officer in Water, Energy and Environmental Systems, you will provide strategic leadership to enable sustainable water management outcomes for Brisbane within a total water cycle management framework. You will lead the review, implementation and embedding of strategy and policy across Council to influence planning, decision-making and delivery. You will provide strategic advice to management and build organisational capability through functional leadership, stakeholder influence and strong program and project governance to deliver agreed outcomes.
Key skills to be successful in this role are:
- knowledge of total water cycle management, including integrated water cycle planning principles and their application in an urban context.
- high-level skills in stakeholder engagement and communication, including consultation, negotiation, facilitation and advocacy to influence outcomes and support policy implementation across Council.
- the ability to analyse, interpret and apply relevant strategy, legislation, policy and procedures within the water management portfolio to ensure organisational and legislative compliance.
- high-level project and/or program management skills, including governance, risk management, planning, monitoring, reporting and delivery within agreed timeframes and standards.
- well-developed analytical and complex problem-solving skills to synthesise complex information, assess options and develop clear, evidence-based recommendations and support sound decision-making.
- a proven ability to lead and contribute to multi-disciplinary teams by providing functional leadership, mentoring and by giving and receiving feedback to support performance excellence.
Desirable qualifications:
- A tertiary qualification or experience in professional or discipline relevant to the position (e.g. planning, policy, engineering, environmental management, public administration or related)
- Experience working across large, complex organisations (e.g., local government) to influence decision-making and embed policy and standards.
