Our Branch  

Located 70 kilometres north of Brisbane, Bracalba Quarry was purchased by Brisbane City Council in 2003. This 600-hectare site employees approximately 40 people who contribute to the Quarry’s annual production of up to two million tonnes of quarry products for Southeast Queensland civil construction projects. 

The Role 

The Workplace Health and Safety Officer (WHSO) plays an integral role on site as a visible and approachable safety champion who empowers staff to work safely and efficiently. As a WHSO, you will have to be passionate about safety and proactively develop a positive safety and reporting culture, encourage employee involvement and education and drive a continuous improvement mindset. In addition, expertise you may have in the Quarry and Mines industry is a welcome addition to the role.  

The role will involve: 

  • initiating risk assessments, workplace inspections and audits (including external audits with SEQS Team) 
  • undertaking root cause investigations and report on WHS incidents 
  • completing inductions for new staff, contractors and visitors 
  • closing out non-conformances 
  • advising and supporting the Quarry Manager and ensuring management is well-informed of important issues, both proactively and reactively 

Success in this role will have: 

  • strong rapport building skills and emotional intelligence 
  • investigative and audit experience in the quarrying industry 
  • high-level knowledge and application of WHS Management Standards and legislation relevant to the Industry with a positive track record of advising management and staff regarding its implementation 
  • strong use of corporate systems such as SAP, records management, Microsoft Word and Excel 
  • ability in developing, maintaining or updating WHS management systems 

Note: The Workplace Health and Safety Officer works agreed shift hours but ad hoc work outside these hours is required for audits and/or investigations.  

A full pre-placement medical and functional assessment is required for this role.  

Mandatory requirements: 

  • Criminal History Check 
  • C Class Driver’s Licence 
  • Certificate IV Workplace Health and Safety (or equivalent) 
  • Apply Risk Management Processes QMS1 (or equivalent) 
  • Conduct Safety & Health Investigations (or equivalent) 
  • Communication Information QMS3 (or equivalent)
