Our business

Support Services provides Council's key support services under a centralised model. The efficient back-of-house support ensures more resources can be focused on Council’s front-line service delivery.

Employee Services is part of Support Services and is made up of three core functions – Recruitment, Payroll and Learning & Development. We work together to ensure accurate, timely pay and employee lifecycle support across Council.

The Role

The Payroll Team Leader plays a key role in ensuring Brisbane City Council’s payroll is processed accurately, efficiently and on time. Leading the Payrun / Processing team, you will oversee day-to-day payroll activities and help ensure each payrun progresses to schedule, key processing deadlines are achieved, and issues are identified and resolved quickly.

You will lead and support a team of payroll officers, providing technical guidance on complex pay processing matters, allocating workloads effectively and maintaining a strong focus on accuracy, compliance, customer service and operational performance.

This is also an exciting time to join Payroll Services as we continue through a significant period of transformation and payroll system change. The successful applicant will play an active role in our upcoming User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and payroll system rollout, working alongside Payroll, project teams and key stakeholders to test new processes, identify issues and help ensure the new solution is ready for operational use.

Beyond the daily payrun, you will have the opportunity to help shape how Payroll operates into the future by strengthening processes, improving controls, supporting your team through change and identifying opportunities to make our services more efficient and effective.

To be successful you will have:

  • strong leadership skills, with the ability to lead, support, coach and develop a team of payroll officers
  • demonstrated experience in payroll processing and payrun delivery, with a strong understanding of the importance of meeting critical payroll deadlines
  • the ability to manage competing priorities and maintain momentum during high-volume and time-critical payroll processing periods
  • strong technical payroll knowledge and the ability to provide advice and resolve complex pay processing issues
  • a sound understanding of legislative, regulatory and organisational requirements relating to payroll
  • excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across Payroll and the broader organisation
  • the ability to lead and support teams through change and transformation
  • experience in, or an understanding of, system testing, User Acceptance Testing (UAT), system implementation or payroll system change
  • a continuous improvement mindset, with the ability to identify opportunities to strengthen payroll processes, controls and service delivery.
