Work type: Temporary full-time (part time job share opportunities may be available)

Duration: Fixed term contract until the next quadrennial election of March 2028 with the possibility of an extension.

Our Business

Brisbane City Council is one of the largest local governments in the Asia-Pacific region and one of the biggest employers in Queensland. There are 26 Wards across Brisbane with a Councillor representing each Ward and their constituents. The Governance Council and Committee Services branch is responsible for providing administrative and policy support to the Ward Offices to help achieve the best outcomes for the community. 

Our Ward Offices are Brisbane resident’s physical connection to Brisbane City Council and everything the Council offers. At its heart, our Ward Offices are strongly focused on connecting communities, promoting everything Brisbane has to offer and delivering exceptional customer services for residents.

The Ward

The Deagon Ward comprises the suburbs of Boondall, Brighton, Deagon, Sandgate, Shorncliffe, Taigum, most of Geebung and Zillmere and the parts of Virginia. It also includes South East Queensland’s beautiful Moreton Island. The Deagon Ward is proud to be home to a variety of sports clubs, parks, community groups and schools who are all proud to be part of the Deagon Ward. The Deagon Ward is proud to have and advocate for some of Brisbane’s most significant RAMSAR wetland sites including the Brighton Wetlands, Deagon Wetlands, Boondall Wetlands and the lagoon system out to Bramble Bay. The Deagon Ward Office is seeking a Ward Officer to support the work of the Ward Office in bringing the community together and providing great customer service and support for its residents and groups.

The Role

Keeping our community safe and connected is at the heart of everything our Ward Officers do. As a Ward Officer, you will be the first point of contact for all in-person, telephone and written inquiries from residents, businesses and the wider community. Working within a small team, your role will be to ensure the high quality and effective administration and customer service output of the Ward Office through interactions with the community residents at local events and other stakeholders on behalf of Brisbane City Council.

To be successful, you will have experience providing a diverse range of high-quality administrative and customer service tasks, strong computer skills and hands on experience with content writing and video and photo editing for digital channels. Our ideal candidate is someone who is flexible, energetic, agile and can take the initiative to keep matters organised. Your professional attitude will enable you to succeed in a busy office environment with competing demands and priorities.

You will be required to accompany the Councillor to community events from time to time and assist with some event preparation in the Ward Office throughout the year. Having a drivers licence and vehicle will be highly desirable. 

To be successful you will have:

  • experience providing exceptional customer service
  • strong administration and secretarial support skills
  • well-developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • design and editing skills for a range of social media platforms and newsletter publications
  • excellent problem solving and research skills
  • the ability to work autonomously and within a small team environment.
