What you’ll do

As an Income Recovery Officer, you will play an important role in helping tenants maintain stable housing while ensuring the sustainability of community housing services. Working closely with tenancy and housing teams, you’ll take a proactive and supportive approach to managing rent and non-rent arrears.

This role combines strong relationship skills with practical problem solving. You’ll work directly with tenants to help them understand their rent responsibilities, explain rent calculations, identify financial risks early, negotiate payment arrangements and connect them with support services that can help them maintain their tenancy.

You’ll also contribute to maintaining clear records, preparing reports and ensuring recovery processes align with policy and legislation. From liaising with internal teams to representing arrears matters when required, your work will help ensure consistent, fair and effective income management.

You’ll be trusted to make a valuable impact by:

  • Monitoring rent and non-rent accounts and initiating proactive arrears recovery actions
  • Negotiating payment plans with current and former tenants to recover outstanding debts
  • Supporting tenants with advice, referrals and early intervention to prevent arrears escalation
  • Preparing arrears notices, documentation and evidence for matters including SACAT hearings
  • Maintaining accurate records and reporting on arrears activity and recovery outcomes

What you’ll bring

To thrive in this role, you will have:

  • Experience in income recovery, debt collection, arrears management and/or accounts receivable
  • Strong negotiation, conflict resolution and communication skills
  • Excellent organisation and time management with the ability to manage multiple cases
  • Solid computer skills including MS Office, databases and record management systems

We would also love you to have:

  • Understanding of rent calculations, Centrelink payments or CentrePay deductions
  • Experience working in community housing, tenancy services or social services
  • Experience preparing documentation for tribunal processes such as SACAT
  • A customer-focused mindset and a genuine commitment to supporting vulnerable communities
