American Football Australia (AFA) is the governing body for American football in Australia. We are committed to promoting both Tackle and Flag Football, developing, and growing the sport across the nation. We work with the Australian Sports Commission, local clubs, schools, and other organisations to create opportunities for participation at all levels, from grassroots to elite competitions.

About the role

American Football Australia is entering into an exciting new chapter as the sport expands across Australia, with Flag Football set to make its debut in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. We are on the lookout for a highly capable team player for the position of National Athletic Performance Director (NAPD). The NAPD is a key pillar in ensuring AFA meets its high-performance goals and objectives, delivering internationally competitive results at both junior and senior levels.

Reporting to the High Performance Director, the key duties will include:

  • Develop world leading national athletic performance benchmarks and guidelines to aid talent ID.
  • Create and manage day to day athletic performance programs for all national team squad members.
  • Work with the National Coaching Director to create manage and update talent ID player databases.
  • Lead all High Performance camps, events and tournaments from an Athletic Performance perspective.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for coaches and players in the National teams for all athletic performance topics.
  • Prepare and provide regular athletic performance reports to the High Performance Director.
  • Liaise with relevant program stakeholders including the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), International Federation of American Football (IFAF), key HP partners and other international HP program coaching leads.

About you

We are looking for someone with the following qualifications, skills, traits and experiences:

  • Elite level experience in Athletic Performance for equivalent both at an individual level and team sports.
  • Experience working with international American Football Players.
  • High level knowledge of sports tech, including GPS.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with stakeholders.
  • Flexible and agile with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.

Position location

Ideally the successful applicant will reside in Sydney or Canberra subject to visa requirements in the case of an international candidate. The role will require relatively frequent interstate and overseas travel.
